SONOBUOY PING!

Click on pic for past Navair pings.
Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation.
This is a medium to low volume pinglist.

He is blowing a bosun’s pipe with his right hand and saluting with his left. Piping aboard dignitaries is an old custom that predates the USN. The number of sideboys increases with rank. Eight is the maximum.

Eight sideboys and the bosun. The other guy in white is probably the air travel officer. He meets every passenger landing, even an E-2 replacement.

Rainbow sideboys? At first I thought that referred to suspension of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” rule. I had forgotten about the working colors worn by flight deck crewmen!

Thanks for the info. I have seen piping aboard on two ships, the Carl Vinson and the Constellation. During both ceremonies, the Bos’n Mate never saluted, just piped.

He may be on limited duty due to injury, but sideboy duty is not that demanding! (Been there, done that!)

Shure bear the roast beef and rices we were served every other day on the way to Desert Storm. They are still doing that? I remember when I was in during the '70's days on end when they served roast beast and rice for lunch, supper and midrats (lunch for the night crew).
My mother fixed me a special meal when I got home. Her roast was much better, though.

A second look reveals it: he is the Boatwain’s Mate, piping the General aboard with his right hand, saluuting with his left. A Navy tradition.

USAF veteran here, so I’ve never seen first hand what a boatswain does. But I had heard (or read) about the left-hand salute custom many years ago. It is interesting that not much came up when I googled the term. With such and old and singular custom, you would think it would be explained in detail in a Navy regulation somewhere.

To: beebuster2000
He’s the BW (deck ape) who is “piping” the General aboard.

Some of our greatest presidents were generals. If the military must step in to stop any unconstitutional Obama action and disband Congress I would support the move as long as General Petraeus was interim president until elections could be held. That or—let him run as a Reform Republican in 2012. Petraeus/Palin Ticket sound good?
