Well, old Hanson’s got it wrong about the Albert Canal. The Germans , in the words of Scotty, found it to be ‘no tribble a’tall’.

I love to read the reviews by the movie and music critics of the day. They are sometimes florid, almost Victorian in style. Here, the effusive critic paints a vivid word-picture of Rachmaninoff's artistry in concert.

Imagine being in Carnegie Hall that night listening to one of the world's greatest pianists performing the music of the world's greatest composers. What a thrill that would have been. In this case, being "florid" is quite apropos and forgivable in describing what was evidently an unforgettable evening.

Another article above, "The Near East is Prepared" should be read by every freeper. Some things about Islam and the Middle East never change. How a Muslim gets to his heaven hasn't changed either, has it? Plus, the photo of King Farouk when he was young, lean and corrupt is an interesting contrast to the well-known pictures we saw of him when he was old, morbidly fat and just as corrupt.

Finally, the few lines in the post-WWI snippet, " 'Last' " Man Rite Fatal" abruptly turns into something rather startling and not a little creepy. Yikes!

All in all, another great thread today. Thanks, Homer.

Today I have an address to the people from the First Lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill. I find it a bit ironic that Winston at this stage is consistently addressing the people and acting as the leader he will soon be. At the same time I don't have very much on Chamberlain addressing the people over this time frame. Though it may just be that Churchill was better archived.

I guess the Grand Mutif of Jerusalem did not get the message about fighting Nazis. He had no problem joining Hitler and if I remember right there was a SS Units with Palentinians Muzzies in it.
