The Book The NBA Doesn't Want You To Read

We've obtained a copy of Tim Donaghy's book, Blowing the Whistle, which purports to expose the NBA's "culture of fraud" and which Random House was set to publish next month — until, a source says, the league threatened to sue...

It's all based on lies and fraud. We live in a world of illusion. How long can it go on?

I am an NBA statistician and I find the very first story hard to believe. Last season I’d bet there were fewer than 10 technicals called on players the entire season of home games. I’m interested to skim the rest of the article.

I have said for awhile that the fix is in through the NBA. It was obvious that Charles Smith was continually fouled in the final minutes of game seven between the Knicks and the Bulls yet nothing was called. The Knicks should have won that game. It is also obvious that the hack Jordan got special treatment most of the time.

I think he’s talking about earlier seasons. The second article is eye-popping.

As a Suns fan, we long suspected there was a league wide thing against the Suns and in favor of the Spurs. Now I’m sure of it. Disgusting.

If true, very disturbing. My brother is a big NBA (Lakers) fan, but he may not be after he reads this!

As an avid Mavericks fan, I was always suspicious as to how the Heat beat the Mavs four straight in the 2006 Finals after winning the first two.

I’m doing more digging, but I’d like to see the quarter by quarter foul calls.

Look how close games 3, 5, and 6 are after the Mavs easily won games 1 and 2 by 10 and 14 points. Then look who is chief for a critical game 4 where the Mavs could have gone up 3-1 headed back home.

1: HEAT 80 @ MAVERICKS 90
2: HEAT 85 @ MAVERICKS 99
3: MAVERICKS 96 @ HEAT 98
4: MAVERICKS 74 @ HEAT 98 ‘The Bavetta Effect’ see below
5: MAVERICKS 100 @ HEAT 101
6: HEAT 95 @ MAVERICKS 92

Look at the crew chief for Gane 4 Miami blowout: Dick Bavetta

And the 4th quarter shutdown is questionable (20 to 7 ???):

1 2 3 4 T
DAL (14-9) 25 19 23 7 74
MIA (16-7) 30 24 24 20 98

Referees:
Game 1
Officials: Bennett Salvatore , Joe Crawford , Joe Derosa
Game 2
Officials: Bob Delaney , Eddie F. Rush , Steve Javie
Game 3
Officials: Dan Crawford , Jack Nies , Ken Mauer
Game 4
Officials: Bernie Fryer , Dick Bavetta , Mike Callahan
Game 5
Officials: Bennett Salvatore , Joe Crawford , Joe Derosa
Game 6
Officials: Dan Crawford , Eddie F. Rush , Steve Javie

One of my uncles works for the Spurs and has made similar allegations about the league fixing games for ratings.

Meh, I get free Spurs tickets so I won’t complain.

Dick Bavetta also rumored to have problems with Mavericks’ owner Mark Cuban, who is also a ref critic. I gues what goes around comes around. But, question is, who started it?

I haven’t watched an NBA game since that series. The refereeing the season prior was just as bad. I became fed up and decided that watching “fixed” games was a waste of my time and energy. No more roundball for me.

Unlike football - there is no skill involved. I mean, how hard is it for a 7-8 footer to drop a ball through a hoop?

All I know is that in one case, we got Stoudamire and Diaw suspended for a game during the Spurs series for “coming onto the court” yet Duncan did the same thing the next game without any call at all. Bowen was a thug in every game and got away with incredible dirty stuff. The only question that I always had was, “Why SA?” What was it about SA? Because SA wasn’t a major market-—not even close to Dallas and certainly not close to Miami. But the Hispanic thing made sense (.e., the excerpt that said Tommy Nunez had a big Hispanic connection in SA and wanted to pull them in).
