Shrimp's eye points way to better DVDs

LONDON (Reuters) – The amazing eyes of a giant shrimp living on Australia's Great Barrier Reef could hold the key to developing a new type of super high-quality DVD player, British scientists said on Sunday.

Mantis shrimps, dubbed "thumb splitters" by divers because of their vicious claws, have the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom.

They can see in 12 primary colors, four times as many as humans, and can also detect different kinds of light polarization -- the direction of oscillation in light waves.

...giant shrimp...

Trying to get my head around this one.

Kinda like Pygmy Mammoth. I read elsewhere that they are not really shrimp. They are...whatever.

With the price of blu ray players dropping over time I have trouble imagining picture...or sound...quality being much better than that.

Rather than improving the DVD’s why not improve our eyes? I’d love to see “12 primary colors”...

And two pupils per eye?

Complex eye indeed.

You can get one of these buggers pretty easily in a reef setup. They hitchhike in on live rock.

They can see in 12 primary colors

That's interesting since there are only three primary colors.

Well since we can’t see more than three, how would we be able to tell that fancy, gay sea critters could? :-)

How long is the physical format even going to be around, though? More and more people are choosing to rent through on demand. The next player is probably going to be another Tivo-type hard drive unit.

If the we be me then...we can't. But that's why I'm doing this and not making the big bucks for cavorting with fancy, gay sea critters.

They know because they are them and not me. That's really all I know.
