Sheik Hamad Bin Abdullah Al-Thani Of Qatar Ordered To Suspend Work [He's Remodeling France]

Paris, France (BANG) - Qatar's Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah al-Thani has been ordered to suspend work on his new property. French conservationists have taken the prince to court over his plans to modernize Hotel Lambert, a 17th century property on the bank of the River Seine in Paris, insisting he would cause "irreversible damage" to the listed historic monument.

However, the Prince - who paid a rumored 60 million Euros for the property two years ago - insists his proposed plans will restore the building to its former glory.

His lawyer, Thierry Tomasi, said the plans were drawn up by leading French specialists and "approved and accepted by the French Committee for Historical Monuments."

He added: "The prince is a true lover of French art and architecture, particularly of the 17th Century, of which the Hotel Lambert is a famous example."

"The very purpose of this project is to preserve the building, to preserve all its elements which have historic, cultural and architectural value and to restore this monument to its past glory."

On Tuesday a judge ordered Hamad - brother of the Emir of Qatar - to halt his work pending a decision on the objections.

The building, which is where Chopin composed some of his music and author Voltaire lived with his mistress, is severely dilapidated, with parts of the timber structure rotting away, paint cracked and discolored and staircases sagging.

The former owners, the Rothschild family, sub-divided the building into apartments and the prince wants to restore it to a single residence, triggering the objections from the Historic Paris association who say it will change the character of the mansion.

Pierre Housieaux, head of the association, told the BBC: "We're grateful that the Hotel Lambert has been acquired by someone who has the means to look after it, but we do oppose his renovation plan because it's too much for this building."

"Renovation isn't about trying to restore the building as it might have been in the 17th Century, it's a question of making do with what's there, keeping the additions made over the centuries and preserving the building."

8,000 people have signed a petition against the prince's proposed work.

The Paris city fathers remember the Saudi prince in Bev Hills who ‘remodeled’ the statues on his property with pink paint and anatomical ‘male features’....

Come’n listen to my story ‘bout Sheik Hamad
A poor sand scratcher, kept his family real bad

And then one day, he was lookin’ for some food
And up through the sand come a bubblin’ crude
(Oil, that is, black gold, Towelhead tea)

Well, the first thing you know, old Hamad’s got lotsa dough
and the wife keeps a bitchin’ that “we gotta go”

His buddys said, damn, Sheik, move away from here
They all said Par-ee is the place to sit’n have a beer

So they packed up the Boeing and took off with a load.
And now they livin’ high in their new abode.
