A man who turned blue after self-medicating for a skin condition says his hue is lightening.
Paul Karason, 58, has the strange Papa Smurf look as a side effect of using a silver compound which he used more than a decade ago to treat a bad case of dermatitis on his face.
But he told NBC's Today Show that his skin is lightening because he is now using the self-administered doses of colloidal silver less.
'Im in a place right now where its very difficult for me to make my own, and my resources are limited and its very expensive,' he explained to host Matt Lauer, a year after first appearing on the programme.
Colloidal silver is a suspension of silver in a liquid base - in this case, distilled water.
Silver has antibacterial properties and has been used to fight infection for thousands of years.
But it went out of use when penicillin, which is far more effective, was developed.

I LOL’D
That was fascinating!
I really don’t get this. He couldn’t have turn blue overnight. I would think that if you start seeing your skin change colors, you would stop using it.
Yup. I read it ever few years.
So how is his original skin condition comming along?
I woke up this mornin with the sundown shinin in
I found my mind in a brown paper bag within
I tripped on a cloud and fell-a eight miles high
I tore my mind on a jagged sky
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in
(yeah, yeah, oh-yeah, what condition my condition was in)
I pushed my soul in a deep dark hole and then I followed it in
I watched myself crawlin out as I was a-crawlin in
I got up so tight I couldnt unwind
I saw so much I broke my mind
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in
(yeah, yeah, oh-yeah, what condition my condition was in)
Next time keep the garage door open!
Dude! Shoulda stuck with the penicillin.
Expensive?
An ounce of .999 silver is less than twenty bucks.
That’s like three tubes of Neosporin.
And an ounce of silver’s gonna make about as much colloidal silver as like an oil tanker’s worth or so!!
His colloidal silver was too high in concentration is my guess. You shouldn’t need more than 22 parts per million, and you can buy it at those concentration levels as “ASAP Solution”. You can even buy colloidal gold which can help alleviate arthritis pain and is non-toxic.
When you make it yourself the concentrations can get up to 50kppm or more, which causes the bluing of the skin when you use it constantly at those concentration levels.
You only need to use it once in a while when you feel a scratchy throat or flue symptoms coming on, not every day.
Can you cure the flu or a cold in twenty minutes? I didn’t think so.
The key words here are “self administered”
