They’re the ones who did the restorations, around 10 years ago IIRC.

It hasn’t been detailed here yet, but he took three photos (on glass plates) through glass color filters (R, G, B) in quick succession on a single camera.

Fortunately, those plate negatives had archival longevity, so the folks at the L.O.C. were able to scan them at high resolution, clean them up, register them, and color correct them giving these amazing results.

I think I first found out about this on dpreview.com.

BTW, if you look closely, you can sometimes see color fringing due to movement of the people, clouds, water ripples, etc.

Much like the color TV camera shots from the late Apollo missions, and for the same reasons.

Wow! It is astonishing how we take these technologies we have today for granted. Imagine the joy of those who first captured scenes in color, true to the setting colors.

This is actually a photo of the 32 Obama Czars, minus the knucklehead who just resigned. Notice they even painted the house white. Obama is not pictured with them, because the emporer just found out that he has no clothes and refused to be photographed.

Reminds me of some of the WWI footage that is being colorized, when I saw it on TV it looked as if your are there.

We use to look at old black and white photos and think “ ohh that’s so long ago “ and now since we have seen these colorized photos, those people and places look like those pictures were taken today,,,, amazing indeed.

While I am firmly against colorizing black and white movies to make them “accessible”, these color photos of a time which usually can only be viewed in black and white, clearly adds a dimension of appreciation not there with black and white.

I wonder if the description of the exposure process is accurate, though: how could three sequential exposures produce unblurred images of running water, for instance? Cameras making simultaneous red, green and blue exposures on three separate plates were being made in Germany by the 1890s: Maybe that's what was used?
