Men lose their minds speaking to pretty women Talking to an attractive woman really can make a man lose his mind, according to a new study.
Pat Hagan 03 Sep 2009
The research shows men who spend even a few minutes in the company of an attractive woman perform less well in tests designed to measure brain function than those who chat to someone they do not find attractive.
Researchers who carried out the study, published in the Journal of Experimental and Social Psychology, think the reason may be that men use up so much of their brain function or 'cognitive resources' trying to impress beautiful women, they have little left for other tasks.
The findings have implications for the performance of men who flirt with women in the workplace, or even exam results in mixed-sex schools.
Women, however, were not affected by chatting to a handsome man.
This may be simply because men are programmed by evolution to think more about mating opportunities.
Psychologists at Radboud University in The Netherlands carried out the study after one of them was so struck on impressing an attractive woman he had never met before, that he could not remember his address when she asked him where he lived.
Researchers said it was as if he was so keen to make an impression he 'temporarily absorbed most of his cognitive resources.'
To see if other men were affected in the same way, they recruited 40 male heterosexual students.

Interesting study, and from personal experience I totally agree. But not for the reason the researchers postulated.
A sufficiently attractive woman can simply scramble the thought processes of even a reasonable, clear-thinking guy. It’s not that he’s trying to impress her - it’s that his reasoning simply shuts down.
A woman I work with has had this effect on me every time I am near her for several years. It is completely impossible to control, and leaves my brain utterly scrambled for several minutes. I’m totally series.
It’s as if the brain synapses are “de-gaussed”, to use a retro tech term.
Amazing and really humorous, except for the not being able to think part. :)
My name?....What’s my name?
Well this just means most women will have no effect on a man’s concentration.
Holy blood flow, Batman, how could that be?
ONLY and I mean ONLY if you can keep from gouging out your eyes......
Men lose their minds speaking to pretty women....and bears crap in the woods....
“So, what kind of conversation could be held with her?”
A very short one.
I could state the value of PI to 100 digits looking at that pic.
LOL!!!!!!!
LOL. Lose their mind or think with the wrong head??? No need to reply. I do apologize if my comment offends anyone.
I think they are trying to figure the balloons.
Not true, I'm always reproductively focused, dude!
Oh goodness, thanks for posting the pic of the guys with his shirt off. Yes I can relate to what you wrote. ;)
So you want to jump on their bones.
I think that men have, being one, have THEIR, ideal woman imprinted, on their minds. Leads to some odd match ups.
For some reasons, wives experience both enhanced powers of observation and verbal expression, combined with a negative reaction to this loss of intelligence in their spouse.
Maybe scientists should investigate this also.
Reminds me of a show which was on Playboy channel.
(might still be, I canceled because their programming has become utterly moronic anymore)
A guy (the contestant) is unexpectedly invited to participate in a challenge contest for $100 dollar bills at a strip club. His job is to try to focus and answer questions asked to him by a pretty emcee, while another beautiful woman whose job it is to make him lose the contest, does her best to make that impossible.
It’s funny to watch. And so like the study says.
But a programming note to Playboy:
Most of your programming is so stupid it’s simply not worth paying for anymore.
