Police say search dog found stolen meat in man's pants

FRAMINGHAM —

A police dog lost the trail of an armed robbery suspect Friday night because police said it was drawn to the scent of stolen raw meat stuffed in a homeless man's pants.

Edward J. Brown, 48, was arrested at 10:23 p.m. after he admitted he had just stolen the meat from Super Stop & Shop, police spokesman Lt. Paul Shastany said.

Police were investigating an armed robbery at the Framingham Shell station at 480 Franklin St. and had called in a scent-tracking dog from the state police.

A witness said they saw the masked robber running south on Franklin Street, so a trooper had his dog head in that direction, Shastany said.

A few minutes later, they encountered Brown.

"The dog went up to him," said Shastany. "The dog must have smelled a tasty dinner in his pants."

Officers frisked Brown and found nearly $68 worth of meat stuffed in his pants.

Brown admitted he had just stolen the meat from the Temple Street supermarket. He had left the store without being detected and would have gotten away with the theft, if he hadn't met up with the dog, Shastany said.

Brown was charged with receiving stolen property worth less than $250 and disorderly conduct.

Brown pleaded not guilty at his Framingham District Court arraignment Monday and he was released without bail. He is due back in court on Sept. 16 for a pretrial conference.

The suspect in the Shell holdup, meanwhile, has not been found.

Is that meat in your pocket, or is the dog just glad to see you?

I used to have a coffee cup on my desk that read;

...drawn to the scent of stolen raw meat stuffed in a homeless man's pants.

Does raw meat smell different than stolen raw meat?

Sheesh.
