Surely this must be a trick of lighting, or a matter of blurred focus. Is it possible that the First Lady actually has six toes, as she appears to in this picture? And if she did have six toes, would she appear in public in sandals?
Perhaps readers skilled in photo analysis can enlighten us in the comments section.

ya know I remember Bush, Clinton, and Bush wearing casual clothes. I do not remember pictures of them getting off Air Force One or out of the limousine wearing shorts and sandals.

There we were, about 200 young men reporting for our pre-induction physical and the doctors are walking up and down the lines as we stand there, bent over, drawers at our knees.
One doc says to the other, "Hey, this guy's got 6 toes" and the other doc says "Oh, no, not so fast, check him out, he's got 7 toes on the other foot".
The doctors then congratulated him on missing out on the draft ~ 13 toes makes you exempt from being called to military duty.
They were also saying things about "Hey, what you watchin' there; keep your head down, and wow, look at that hemorrhoid!".

I think Lifson is mistaking the dark polish on her big toe as a separation & reading it as 2.
