Joshua has been taking the bus to his local Whole Foods in New York City every five days for the past two years. This week, he said he'll go elsewhere to fulfill his fresh vegetable and organic produce needs.
"I will never shop there again," vowed Joshua, a 45-year-old blogger, who asked that his last name not be published.
Like many of his fellow health food fanatics, Joshua said he will no longer patronize the store after learning about Whole Foods Market Inc.'s CEO John Mackey's views on health care reform, which were made public this week in an op-ed piece he wrote for The Wall Street Journal.
Michael Lent, another Whole Foods enthusiast in Long Beach, Calif., told ABCNews.com that he, too, will turn to other organic groceries for his weekly shopping list.
"I'm boycotting [Whole Foods] because all Americans need health care," said Lent, 33, who used to visit his local Whole Foods "several times a week."
"While Mackey is worried about health care and stimulus spending, he doesn't seem too worried about expensive wars and tax breaks for the wealthy and big businesses such as his own that contribute to the deficit," said Lent.
In his op-ed, "The Whole Foods Alternative to ObamaCare," published Tuesday, Mackey criticized President Barack Obama's health care plan.

Very nice! I kind of like Whole Foods, and now I’ll make a point to shop there when I can.
BTW, I’m wondering how this one person in the article believes that Whole Foods and other corporations are contributing to the deficit. I mean, I wonder how he would explain that. Obviously it’s the knee-jerk “business is bad” mentality. Imagine a society in which people like this actually got what they wanted.
“””Shhhh... there are quite a few conservatives who love to indulge in the fetish of organic food, and we shop accordingly.”””””
Yeah boy, sometimes whenever I have a seperated crankcase in my hands sizing it up to weld some brackets to the frame of a motorcycle or whenever I have a bunch of fat buddies over at the house drinking beer and smoking cigars and playing cards, they all cheer when I bring out the fresh fruits and organic vegetables.
I’ll be shopping there more frequently now, thanks for the post.
Yes Mackey was a hippie when he opened his first store on North Lamar in Austin but he’s since become an out and out, self confessed Libertarian. This isn’t the first time he’s pointed out the dangers of big government.
Popcorn? Enjoy.
Cut CO2, suffocate a vegetable, starve a vegan.
People buying “organic” vegetables should be more concerned with cap and trade adding to the cost of their veggies. Eating healthy reduces their need for health care to the point where no health care subsidy should be needed.
Wait till they are hungry and can’t afford scarce vegetables and see what they complain about then.
The key is Mr. Mackey is right. None of his common sense proposals are in the stupid bills. The whining customers think they will get FREE healthcare from this bill, how wrong they are.
I’d be there routinely if we had a Whole Foods near me. I started out with organic potatoes locally and noticed a big difference in taste.
Aren’t they lucky that the free enterprise system provides alternative sources of food?
The evil corporations get all those corporate tax breaks due to their crooked cronyism, so they aren't paying their "fair" share. In effect robbing the country of its rightful claim to their money.
At least I think that is the thinking. How dare they not pay an exorbitant tax rate and never profit! /sarc
Joshua has been taking the bus to his local Whole Foods in New York City.... to fulfill his fresh vegetable and organic produce needs..... a 45-year-old blogger.
I bet the chicks just love this guy.
Scene: A Bar in NYC:
Woman at Bar: So, what do you do?
Joshua: I’m a blogger.
Woman at Bar: No, I mean what do you DO?
Joshua: I’m a blogger.
Woman at Bar: No, I mean what do you do for WORK?
Joshua: I’m a blogger.
Woman at Bar: Oh.
(pause)
Woman at Bar: What do you drive?
Joshua: I took the bus.
Woman at Bar: Get lost, loser.
So are the vegetables & produce I buy at Albertson's synthetic?
We've long patronized Whole Foods for the cheese section. We'll be tossing a few more dollars their way after this one.
We've tended to avoid Whole Foods because of the prices, distance to the store, and also because there's something off-putting about the sickly-but-righteous-looking crowd who tend to shop there (in Colorado Springs, anyway -- somehow it's less obnoxious elsewhere).
I'll probably still not go there, but I'll think nicer thoughts about 'em.
Maybe he is trying to expand it beyond the left wing fringe.
And if you're a cheese person, I highly recommend a stop at WF the next time you're in the area. The selection is incredible and the prices aren't really that bad.
There's always a very knowledgeable and helpful person behind the counter who's willing to slice off a few samples for you, too.
Did I mention I really love cheese?
Best,
L
I am simply floored by this. Tax breaks contribute to the deficit. Not government overspending and wastefulness. Tax breaks.
The concept of government cutting spending never occurs to these people, and that's scary.
I'll look to patronize this man's store, and maybe help make up for what knee-jerk stupidity takes away.
Next time I might just use them to satisfy my full-service cheese counter needs.
Awesome tamales, you say?
I’ll have to check ‘em out!
