Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)

Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no “creature comforts.” But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor he’s called home for the last three years.

To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesn’t need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, it’s an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

Blair Expands Recall To All Women’s Chenille Apparel Due to Burn Hazard; Additional Reported Deaths Prompt Re-Announcement of Robe Recall; 9 Reported Deaths in Total; Consumers Urged to Stop Use of Flammable Wearing Apparel

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Blair LLC, of Warren, Pa., are expanding Blair’s voluntary recall of women’s full length chenille robes to include additional chenille robes and three other chenille products all manufactured by A-One Textile & Towel. CPSC and Blair also are re-announcing the earlier recall of women’s robes.

In April 2009, Blair recalled 162,000 chenille robes after it learned of three robes catching on fire, including one report of second degree burns. Blair then received several reports of deaths allegedly due to robes catching fire. This prompted a second news release in June 2009 to again alert consumers to the burn hazard for the chenille robes. After this re-announcement, Blair received four additional reports of deaths allegedly due to the robes catching fire. Three of these victims were cooking and a fourth was tending a pellet stove; three of the four victims were in their 80s and one was in her 70s. All nine reported deaths occurred prior to the April 2009 announcement of the recall.

CPSC Announces ANPR for Recreational Off-Highway Vehicles (ROVs) to Address Rising Death Toll

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Furthering its commitment to improve the safety of Recreational Off-Highway Vehicles (ROVs) and reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries nationwide, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission voted to publish an advance notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPR) to address safety hazards associated with vehicle ROVs.

CPSC staff’s preliminary evaluations indicated that the vehicles may exhibit inadequate lateral stability, undesirable steering characteristics, and inadequate occupant protection during a rollover crash. The staff reviewed the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association (ROHVA) draft proposed American National Standard for Recreational Off-Highway Vehicles, ANSI/ROHVA 1-200X and found preliminarily that it does not adequately address the deaths and injuries associated with ROV rollovers and collisions.

The ANPR invites written comments from the public regarding the risks of injury associated with ROVs and ways in which these risks could be addressed. Following publication of the ANPR, the public will have 60 days to provide comments to the Commission. Comments can be submitted at www.regulations.gov

It just occurred to me today that I still haven’t seen any coverage in the MSM why we are having so many H1N1 cases in the USA, at a time when much of the population would still have relatively high levels of Vitamin D, still stored from the summer sun.

I was wondering if anyone on this messagethread might have run across any articles about this.... as surely many of those school children did not stay inside the entire summer....

Thank you.

Yep, it sure is a different feel on base then in our general society.

I loved it so much, I asked my husband if he would mind reenlisting so we could get base housing. (He declined...)

Now the big squeeze is on against FOX News...

And...

They are trying to throttle free speech on the internet and talk radio...

Is anyone paying attention???????

I can't believe the President of the US has nothing better to do than whine about OPINION programs on Fox (Beck and Hannity) and go begging for the Olympics.

And no, it appears the American people couldn't care less about free speech being taken away by a socialist administration. Fascist is probably more like it (as you posted previously about the similarities between Obama and Hitler).

Treasury Surpasses $3 Billion in Recovery Act Funds for States to Provide Affordable Housing

California to Receive $284 Million in Payments in Lieu of Tax Credits;
To Date, 45 State Housing Agencies Receive Funds

WASHINGTON – As part of the Obama Administration’s efforts to strengthen communities and ease pressures on the housing market, the U.S. Department of the Treasury today announced $284 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act) funding to spur the development of affordable housing in California. To date, 45 state housing authorities have been awarded a total of $3.1 billion in payments in lieu of tax credits for affordable housing projects.

“This innovative Recovery Act program allows the federal government to partner with states to support local developers and helps ensure that housing developers can access the financing necessary to build affordable housing,” said Treasury Deputy Secretary Neal Wolin. “We have worked quickly to make available more than $3 billion to state housing agencies, and we expect to see continued efforts at the state level, so that these funds can be delivered to the communities that need it most.”

In May 2009, the Treasury Department launched an innovative program to provide payments in lieu of tax credits to state housing agencies to jump start the development or renovation of qualified affordable housing for families across the country. Upon receiving notice of these allocations, state housing agencies manage a competitive process to disburse funds to qualified developers. This is an ongoing program open to additional state applications through 2010.

The following is a complete list of funds awarded to states under the program to date. For more information on the award to California, please contact Alice Scott, Public Affairs Director of the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee, ascott@treasurer.ca.gov, (916) 651-9411.

State investigates Dairyland dog deaths

State investigators are trying to determine what caused the deaths of
6 greyhounds at the Dairyland dog track in Kenosha, including 4 that
bled to death.

The Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection is
testing the food the dogs ate to see if the deaths are due to a
food-borne illness.

The state Division of Gaming is also investigating. Gaming
administrator Bob Sloey says 2 dogs that died last weekend [17-18 Oct
2009] came from different kennels. The 1st 4 deaths, since August
[2009], involved dogs from the same kennel operator.

The investigation comes as dog track operators decide the future of
Dairyland. It lost USD 3.4 million last year [2008]. Attendance so
far this year is down 19 percent.

[Perhaps the top differential should be anticoagulants, of which
there are a number of different forms. They are most often known as
rodenticides. The article does not give us enough clinical signs to
list differentials, but speculation may include aflatoxin, in
addition to rodenticides, and perhaps even mycotoxins or perhaps
mushrooms. Hopefully samples have been submitted to the diagnostic
lab in Wisconsin.

The evidence presented in this article is sketchy at best. We would
appreciate an authoritative source providing more information. - Mod.TG]

Rituxan (rituximab) - PML

Audience: Rheumatological healthcare professionals

Genentech and FDA notified healthcare professionals about a third case of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy [PML], the first case of PML in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis [RA] treated with Rituxan who has not previously received treatment with a TNF antagonist. Information to date suggests that patients with RA who receive Rituxan have an increased risk of PML.

Physicians should consider PML in any patient being treated with Rituxan who presents with new onset neurologic manifestations. Consultation with a neurologist, brain MRI, and lumbar puncture should be considered as clinically indicated.

The allergy alert and recall relates only to the above mentioned mispackaged Breyers® ice cream. No other Breyers® ice cream products are affected.

No adverse reactions have been reported to date. In addition to working in cooperation with the FDA, the company is also issuing an alert through the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network.

The recall was initiated after the company received a few consumer complaints about the mispackaged product. It was determined that product containing wheat was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of wheat in the ingredient list on the tub.

Consumers who have purchased the mispackaged Breyers® ice cream with UPC # 077567254245 and in combination with “Best If Used By” dates of FEB1711GH, FEB1811GH and FEB1911GH are urged to discard it immediately and contact the company at 1-877-270-7402 for a full refund. For consumers outside the United States, please send an email to comments.breyers@unilever.com for a full refund.

Mexican bean pots have dangerous levels of lead

Mexican bean pots with up to 30 times the level of lead permitted by federal guidelines have been pulled from the shelves of a local food chain after a health inspector found one in a Concord home and tested it in a county lab.The pot was designed to simmer beans for hours, a practice that can cause lead from glaze and clay in the pot to leach into food. Elevated levels of lead from food and other sources can cause learning disabilities and inhibit growth in children. At extremely high levels, it can cause serious illness and even death, said Joanne Genet, manager of Contra Costa’s lead poisoning prevention program.”We were shocked when tests came back positive for lead even though the pot was stamped lead-free....”

How to make Baskets

PREFACE

The twisting and weaving of Nature’s materials,
grasses, twigs, rushes and vines, into tisefal and
beautiful forms seems almost instinctive in man.
Perhaps it came to him as the nest-weaving instinct
comes to birds — ^for at first he used it as thev do,
in the building of his house. Later, shields and
boats were formed of wicker work, but how long ago
the first basket was made no one is wise enough
to tell us. To-day Indian tribes in South America
weave baskets from their native palms. South
African negroes use reeds and roots, while the
Chinese and Japanese are wonderful workmen in
this as in other arts and industries; but basketry
has come down to us more directly through the
American Indian. Generations of these weavers
have produced masterpieces, many of which are
preserved in our museums, and the young basket
maker need not go on long pilgrimages to study
the old masters of his craft. Here at last, as in
England, the value of manual training is being
realized, and basketry is taking an important place ;

VI PREFACE

following the kindergarten and enabling the child
to apply the principles he has learned there. He
still works from the centre out, and weaves as he
wove his paper mats, but permanent materials have
replaced the perishable ones, and what he makes
has an actual value.

Basketry also fills the need for a practical home
industry for children; so not only in school, club
and settlement, but on home piazzas in summer
young weavers are taking their first lessons.
Though they are unlearned in woodcraft, and have
not the magic of the Indian squaw in their finger-
tips, they can, and do, feel the fascination of
basketry in the use of rattan, rush and raffia. It
is hoped that this book may be a help in teaching
them “How to Make Baskets.”

[If you haven’t tried to make baskets, then you have missed one of the joys of this world.

It is very satisfying to go and pick tree branches, Honeysuckle the Grape vine trimmings or anything you can think of to use.

Even rag strips, can be used for the weavers or if small enough and the hook large enough crocheted into a basket.

So can used bread bags, hay binder twine, LOL, yes granny had to try everything.

One of my joys in this world.

There is no such thing as a ‘useless ‘ basket, for if you set an empty basket on the table, someone will put something in it within 24 hours, even if it is only the cat, moving her babies in or teaching them that it is a good place to play.

And unless you choose to use plastic, you will have a source of containers that are natural.

I keep intending to do an inventory with your spreadsheet, but just can’t seem to find the time.

I imagine you have LOTS of stuff to inventory - the sheer volume would make it overwhelming to even start.

I'm thinking I need to buy more dehydrated items. And of course, can lots more as well when I find good sales on meat. I just don't have the space to put it all. Except that we will be the proud owners of a sea train next week - and that should help. I get all the space that is left after the beloved tractor is in there ;)

Here is some good info from certifiedangusbeef. com...

Chuck
Meat is basically muscle, and the chuck happens to be a heavily exercised area. Luckily, this area contains a great deal of connective tissue, including collagen. Collagen melts during cooking, making the meat intensely flavorful. Cuts from this area benefit from slow, wet cooking methods like stewing, braising or pot-roasting.
* Blade Roast-an inexpensive cut which lies next to the ribs; more tender than most chuck; makes an excellent roast. Alternatively, the roast can be cut into a rib-eye steak, with meat above and below the bone excellent for stir-fry dishes
* Chuck Steak-a good choice for kabobs if well marinated
Rib
Tender and flavorful ribs can be cooked any number of ways. Most recipes call for ribs to be roasted, sauteed, pan-fried, broiled, or grilled.
* Rib Roast-known as a standing rib roast (bone left in), or without the bone for convenient slicing. Excellent when dry roasted. A seven-bone prime rib roast can be quite a hefty addition to the dinner table. It is great for a crowd, but for a small family a bone roast will do. Many butchers will cut a roast to order for you
* Rib Steak-also cut from the rib section, these tender steaks can be purchased bone-in or as boneless rib-eye
Short Loin
This area boasts extremely tender cuts and can be prepared without the aid of moist heat or long cooking times. Cuts from the short loin may be sautéed, pan fried, broiled, pan broiled or grilled.
* Porterhouse Steak-a very popular steak cut from the rear end of the short loin; the name originated from the days when it was served in public alehouses that also served a dark beer called porter. The porterhouse consists of both tenderloin and strip steak. The tenderloin is often served separately as filet mignon
* T-bone Steak-cut from the middle section of the short loin; similar to the porterhouse steak; has a smaller piece of the tenderloin; usually grilled or pan-fried
* Tenderloin-often considered the most tender cut of beef; responds well to sauces, meaning the meat does not overpower the flavor of the sauce. It can be cut as the whole strip, or into individual steaks for filet mignon
Sirloin
“The backbone’s connected to the ... hipbone”-not a song, but a sirloin. These tender cuts respond well to sautéing, pan-frying, broiling, pan-broiling or grilling.
* Sirloin Steaks-these steaks are available in a variety of boneless and bone-in steaks
* Sirloin Tip Roast-excellent when dry roasted or marinated
Flank
This meat is lean, muscular and very flavorful. Flank is primarily used for flank steaks and rolled flank steaks. It can also be used for kabobs.

* Flank Steak-this steak has a great flavor, and should be sliced thin against the grain for maximum chewability. Use to make the classic London broil
Short Plate
This section is best used for stew meat, where its rich, beefy flavor can be appreciated.
Round
The round consists of lean meat well-suited to long, moist cooking methods.
* Top Round-this is the most tender part of the round; it can be prepared as pot roast or cut into thick steaks for braised dishes
* Rump Roast-a very popular cut for pot roast, but can also be roasted at low temperatures
Shank/Brisket
Traditionally used for corned beef, brisket is best prepared with moist heat. Suitable preparation methods include stewing, braising and pot-roasting.
* Foreshank-excellent stew meat
* Brisket First Cut-a leaner cut of the brisket, for those who want the flavor but not the fat of a brisket pot roast
* Brisket Front Cut-fork tender and succulent, a Certified Angus Beef ® pot roast made with this cut is truly mouthwatering
