Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)

Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no “creature comforts.” But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor he’s called home for the last three years.

To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesn’t need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, it’s an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

Thanks Granny!!!!!

I’m around and I read. I just don’t post as often as I used to do.

I was talking to a frind in Delaware yesterday and told her about the situation. She loves to talk about her “gypsy” blood...........her mother was actually born in Transylvania. Anyway, she said to me yesterday morning (about 11a.m. eastern) that my refrigerator problem would be solved within 48 hours.

I’m in the process of writing her an email because she was right. We were at a church function this evening and my husband had been putting the word out and wouldn’t you know, the local Kiwanis has a refrigerator that needs a new home. All we need to do is pick it up.

In answer to your question about my garden this year, it basically was a bust. Too little rain when it was needed and too much when it wasn’t. My volunteer tomato and squash plants are still going great guns, but it takes a heck of a lot of grape tomatoes to make even a quart of sauce. They make excellent green tomato pickles, though and I will be making more of those tomorrow!!!!

Pepsi Pork Roast

1 12 oz. can of Pepsi
1 10 ¾ oz. can of cream of mushroom soup
½ of a 1 ¼ oz. package onion soup mix

Place roast in crock-pot. Mix dry soup mix with can of soup in bowl. Stir in Pepsi. Pour on top of roast.
Cook on high for 4-5 hrs or low for 8 hrs.
Remove roast, add cornstarch or flour to juices to create gravy. This can be made in 325 degree oven…..bake covered 4 hrs. I double the Pepsi and soup ingredients because we love the gravy.

>>>I have my fingers crossed that it will grow and the MSM will be forced to cover it.<<<

I think the way to accomplish that is for everyone to daily email them a dozen or so articles that they should cover, and for others to call them with information on events and happenings that they should cover... Cover them up with what they SHOULD be covering.

Just think if they got 50,000 emails on Acorn, 50,000 emails on every other real newsworthy item, and matching phone calls - if nothing else, it would tie them up just sorting it out.

Think enough would do it to make it work?

Dang, if I had known that, I would have run down the peninsula with a trailer load... Most everything did really well. Gave away tons - till daughters and neighbors give you that look like - How much are you going to bring? And the rest has gone to the chickens, and the deer are making regular trips to the watermelons left in the garden.

I was looking for a nice way to wrap a wedding gift in cloth and found out
about this Japanese art. It’s really easy - tying knots in a flat square
piece of cloth to make satchels, bags, reusable gift wrap that could still
be used as a scarf, table covering etc.

Here’s one video as giftwrap:

I have several remnants and still not sure how long it will be before I can
move everything back out on our new floor and dig out my sewing machine. I’m
using pinking shears on a couple of pieces to make my own furoshiki.

Herbs For Pampering, Not Just Cooking

Posted: 16 Sep 2009 04:02 AM PDT
By all these lovely tokens September days are here, with summer’s best of weather and autumn’s best of cheer. ~Helen Hunt Jackson

We think of herbs as culinary or ornamental most of the time, but they can be used other ways as well. The following recipes are easy to make and will give you an idea of what you can do with your herbs beside cook with them. If you don’t grow herbs you can also buy bulk dried herbs online or look for fresh herbs in the produce section of your grocery store.

This is a neat recipe because if you grow fennel you know that you always have a HUGE amount of seed each year, and it’s nice to have another use for it.

Fennel Cleanser

1 tablespoon fennel seed
1 cup boiling water
1 cup honey
2 tablespoons buttermilk

Lightly crush the seeds, pour over the boiling water and steep for at least 30 minutes. Strain after cooling into a glass bowl or measuring cup. Add the honey and the buttermilk . Pour into a bottle and refrigerate. Use to cleanse your face gently then rinse.

Mint Footbath

Dozen sprigs of mint
1/2 cup cool water
10 cups boiling water

Puree the mint and the cool water in a blender or a food processor. Pour this into a wash basin or any container you can fit both of your feet into. Add the boiling water and cool to a comfortable temperature. Soak both feet together until the water turns cold. Pat dry and use a good moisturizer.

Lady’s Mantle Rinse

4 tsp. dried lady’s mantle leaves
1 cup boiling water

Pour the boiling water over the herb in a glass bowl or measuring cup. Steep for ten minutes or until cooled. Strain and place into a small jar. You can use immediately or chill and use any time within 24 hours. Use cotton pads or cotton balls in the mixture and cleanse your face and neck. You can also add to your bath.

I am glad that you are still reading, it is ok to post here too, but all readers are welcome, for it gives us the reason to exist.

Gardens were either gung ho or poor this year, it is the same every year, maybe that is why God gave us canning information— for use in the good years.

Wishing lots of good luck for you, enough of the bad, already.

“Gardens were either gung ho or poor this year,”

Ours was so so. We had 3 separate garden areas and put quite a bit in, but only a few things did OK. Mainly the cool weather crops. The tomatoes didn’t do well at all. I picked a few almost ripe tomatoes on Thursday, before we left for the weekend. I put them in cardboard box lids, keeping them from touching each other, and put newspaper over the top to keep any flies out. When I checked them on Monday, almost all of them were in various stages of rot. I’ve never seen tomatoes disintegrate so quickly. Hubby and I were saying its kind of a shame we didn’t get as much as we were expecting, as we actually had time to spend in the garden this year compared to other years.
