The difference between a latte and a cappuccino
Examiner ^ | 7/13/2009 | Kim Winklhofer

Ordering an espresso beverage can be intimidating. It may seem like everyone but you knows the lingo. They rattle off long and complicated drink orders without taking a breath.

I’ll have a double tall decaf breve latte, easy foam, one Splenda. Double cupped.

There could be many reasons why you have not yet been assimilated into the coffee culture. Perhaps you're more of a tea drinker. Perhaps you usually like the ice blended drinks, but today you want something hot. Or maybe four dollars for a drink always seemed excessive, until your boss gave you that Starbucks gift certificate.

Whatever the reason, today you’re going to break out of your box and try one of those coffee drinks that everyone else seems addicted to. (That’s it. Come to the dark side.) Unfortunately, you don’t know a cappuccino from a latte.

Never fear.

A cappuccino is equal parts of espresso, steamed milk, and velvety milk froth. Usually the milk is bubblier in a cappuccino.

A latte is also espresso with steamed milk, but with much less milk froth on top. The froth on a cappuccino is part of the foundation of the drink, whereas on a latte, it’s almost like a condiment.

Can't remember which is which? Just look at the word cappuccino. It has three c’s and is a drink of thirds— espresso, milk, and froth. On the other hand, latte is short for caffé latte, Italian for “coffee with milk.”

We should have a business owners post or group or club for all FReepers who own businesses so we can patronize each other if we can.

Man, I love the instant machine. I call it “candy coffee” and it is probably one of my favorite treats.

Why dilute good coffee with milk?

Because it was the only way my mother could get me to drink my milk.

Milk with a bit of coffee and then a bit more coffee and a bit less milk every year until I was taking it straight.

There’s 4 food groups. You left out sugar. Some would claim the fifth group is cigarettes/cigars.

I’m going to start experimenting with making my own expresso using an ordinary pressure cooker.

Any comments/suggestions?

I like all kind of coffee - cappuccino, lattes, macchiatos, basically anything with espresso. I also love Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk and also Thai iced coffee.

I can proudly say i’ve never been in a starbucks. It wasn’t intentional but now I would have to decline on principles.

I like this version:

1. deep fried group
2. beer group
3. salt group
4. jalapeno group

and the optional fifth group being cheese.

The perfect food would therefore be a tossup:

peppers beer battered and deep fried, with extra salt and tobasco sauce...and cheese sauce on the side for dipping...washed down with a cold beer.

or

beer battered cheese sticks, deep fried with extra salt...and spicy salsa on the side for dipping...washed down with a cold beer.

There used to be a little pub near me that sold something they called Beer Batter Chicken Chunks. They were as described obviously but with a curious and satisfying warmth to them. I found out after the joint closed that they would take the raw chicken and soak it overnight in some diluted Tabasco then pat it dry prior to battering and frying. Damn they were good.

I also love Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk
________

I always have a few bags of Trung Nguyen coffee at home. The only coffee I’ve had that even comes close to Vietnamese coffee is 100% Kona.

I see you live in MD, therefore you have access to plenty of Pho places to get Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk, complete with the individual coffee press. :) I need to ask them where they get their coffee. There is a dumpy Pho place in Arlington called Pho 75 where I like to stop in when around the area and get their coffee on ice. I strain it and mix with the condensed milk and then pour over a glass of ice.
