Need Wrinkle Advice from FReeper Sisters
me | July, 11, 2009 | me

OK FReeperettes, I need some help.

It’s finally happened, just as I knew it would… my face is starting to show my age. Quickly.

I knew it would happen just like this. Every woman ages the same in my mother’s family and apparently, I’m no exception. They get seriously carded, their husbands get flack for being with a teenager, nobody believes their teenagers belong to the - until about 40.

Then BOOM! Their faces crater. They go from easily passing for 21 to looking 45 within a few months and it all happens around 40. Doesn’t matter if they smoke or moisturize or how much sun they get. The timing is never off.

I’m almost 40 and for the last month I’ve noticed the dark circles under my eyes getting darker, my skin starting to slack, and my pores starting to enlarge. I don’t have many fine lines; however, if genetics hold true, the wrinkle brigade will be in full force by next summer.

But I will NOT go gracefully into that good night! It’s too early for a facelift (plus I’m a big chicken), so I’m looking for a good face cream. I already moisturize, so I’ve got that going for me, but I need something to fight the dark circles under my eyes and something that firms and tones the skin and reduces pores.

There are literally thousands of products out there. I’d like to find out what’s worked for you. Point me in the right direction my conservative sisters! Tell me where to put my money!

(One thing. I can’t use Retin A. I have some permanent burn scars from using that crap for only two weeks a decade ago.)

Aren’t dark rings under the eyes sometimes caused by anemia or a vitamin deficiency?

I had resolved myself to looking like the “frog lady.” I was horrified, exhausted, moody, grumpy, and every muscle in my body hurt...all the time. I thought ...getting old.

I'm 47 and cried myself to sleep. Even gave up trying to look decent, make-up, hair...why bother if I am to be “frog lady.” The bags, wrinkles, enlarged pores...

I was at an 8.4 when they caught my anemia. Normal is 12-15 and blood transfusions are given between 7-8.

I use the Perricone just like a moisturizer, right after cleaning and before any makeup. The Clarins is supposed to be a makeup base but I dab in on top.
You HAVE to find a Sephora store if you like skin care stuff, it's my biggest vice. Sorry I'm link challenged, just go to www.sephora.com,

I love Prevage MD sold only by doctors. The best "cure" for wrinkles comes from within...make some changes to your diet. Cut the carbs (especially sugar), increase your proteins, nuts, fruits and veggies, take supplements (like fish oil) and wear SUNSCREEN! You would probably do well with some AHA's (alpha hydroxy acids) for exfoliation and some peptides for evening. Go to Sephora and get some samples before you purchase. There are a lot of good skincare lines out there. By the way, I go to a "celeb derm" and she raves about Olay.

yes, I have...have to make sure you do not have a stuffed up nose when using it. You don’t use it with a powerful stream which is dangerous. But I use it with luke warm water and non iodized salt. You stick the blue nob up to your nose (not into it) and the water goes in one nostril and out the other while bathing and cleansing your sinuses. You get use to it. Just have to make sure your head it tilted right so the water doesn’t go down your throat. It’s not highly expensive but talk to your doctor/allergist first about it.

As discussed on another thread a few years back, Prep H used to be great for the under eye area...until the US changed the formula. Now you have to get it from Canada.

I was diagnosed with anemia last winter. I’ll get my levels checked again ASAP. (It would explain why I’m so tired lately.)

From Consumer Reports - sad, but probably true (but I'm trying the stuff in post #59!):

"NO MIRACLES Some brands, such as Olay, worked better than others. But wrinkle creams on average made little difference in the skin’s appearance."

It's expensive and can only be prescribed but Tretinoin Cream works for minor wrinkles.

The side effects aren't worth it, though.

They’ve got me using a sinus wash daily. It’s just a bottle that I squeeze the salt water into my nose with.

I do like the pick idea. Might be faster than the wash I’m using now.

It is not too early for a lift. Just the right time if your genetics hold

Adding five pounds may help stave off some wrinkles

I use plain old Queen Helene Cocoa butter. Cheap, and I have skin that gets complimented.

My husband just shaved his head and got another tattoo. (nice middle aged biker look)

I have heard that Rogaine works, but you can’t stop using it. (Don’t know if I spelled that right.)

I just have one piece of advice for you: don’t use OTC retinol/retinoic acid treatments. I used the L’Oreal treatments, and took before-and-after pictures because I wanted to keep track of all the improvement I was expecting. Just the opposite took place: my wrinkles worsened and the whole thing aged me discernably. I was furious.

I would strongly recommend you consult with a good dermatologist who does cosmetic work, or a plastic surgeon who offers laser treatments and skin care. There is really nothing they can put in a bottle that’s going to penetrate through all the dead layers of skin and fix what’s going on inside. But various chemical and laser options are available, as well as minimal plastic surgery (Botox, Juvederm, etc.) You will waste hundreds or thousands of bucks on stupid creams and lotions, but the same money put into a laser-zotting will fix things for years and years.

And stay out of the sun!!

If Retin A is too harsh for you, try Tazorac. Fabulous!
