WASHINGTON (AFP) Nearly two out of three Americans believe the media gave too much coverage to the death of Michael Jackson and just three percent think it was too little, according to a survey published on Wednesday.
Twenty-nine percent of the 1,000 people polled June 26-29 for the survey by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press believe the coverage of Jackson's sudden death on Thursday at the age of 50 was the "right amount."
Thirty percent of those polled said they followed the coverage of Jackson's death "very closely" while 28 percent said they followed it "fairly closely."
Twenty-three percent said they followed it "not too closely" and 19 percent said they followed it "not at all closely."
Thirty-one percent said they followed the Jackson story more closely than any other during the week.
Pew said African-Americans followed the death of Jackson more closely than the population as a whole with eight in 10 blacks saying they followed the news of his death very closely compared with 22 percent of whites.
Seven in 10 whites said there had been too much coverage compared with 36 percent of blacks.
Thirty-eight percent of those under the age of 40 said they followed the pop star's death very closely compared with 27 percent of those between 40 and 64 and 20 percent of those 65 and older.

More than a simple report an obituary is too much.
A no talent punk dies who did nothing but grab his penis with one hand, while groping any nearby child with the other, and for some reason the whole world is mourning.
I am far more upset that my favorite childhood pinup girl died than that freak of nature.
It is excessive, but it’s 80’s nostalgia which might be a good thing. The icons of the 80’s in the US were Reagan, Pope John Paul II, and Michael Jackson.
Screw the revolutionaries in Iran, screw the missiles in North Korea, screw the threats from Chavez against Honduras....just give me more MJ coverage.
If ever there was a no-brainer, this is it IMO. Thanks.
Excessive? it’s absolutely nauseating, and I, for one, will never watch television news again.
There has to be a big wingding! After all, he was a musical genius who changed the course of the world and made life better for all of us as an entertainment icon. I used to think he was just someone who grabbed his crotch and squealed a lot, but boy have I been re-educated over the last few days. I can not believe I missed all his greatness over the last 20 or so years. And, all the people whose life he changed with his music.
parsy, who is on the verge of buying Thriller as an act of contrition
I thought it much more newsworthy the fact that 13 persons had actually committed suicide whilst grieving over the death of the perverted pedophile.
Sad, is it that many? Really sad.
The "genius" and "hero" labels get thrown around a lot. He was neither. "Thriller" IS a great record DUE LARGELY to Quincy Jones and (more importantly I think) the writing talents of Rod Temperton who composed a majority of songs on that record.
Jackson was sick in many ways and frankly I don't care why.
The American people's fascination with pop idolatry while being led like sheep will be the nation's downfall.
Really?!! Thirteen people killed themselves over the King of Pop? Even MJ would not want people to do that!
Did MJ ever write a song? I thought all he did was priss around and strut around the stage while pyrotechnics went off? I never paid him as much attention as I did a good group, like Dire Straits.
parsy, who is hoping they stick MJ in the ground and get it over with.
He was NEVER known as a composer. And the biggest job of a great producer (Quincy) is to find the right songs. Quincy wisely brought Rod Temperton (from the band Heatwave) along.
Just checked on the major new channels and... he’s still dead!
Every time I look it’s the same.
Most likely more by now.
Some people are really that weak-minded.
I think they could have done a better job covering the MJ death. Not enough coverage in my opinion. Also, here it is barely a week since the death and already mainstream media are starting to talk about other things besides MJ. Not acceptable. Not acceptable at all. This means that they must be racist. Why when Elvis Presley died, we got 24/7 coverage for six full months.
Don’t have TV. Don’t get the newspaper. Don’t subscribe to any magazines. Only listen to the weather radio. Country music on the radio in my truck. My neighbors haven’t said anything about Michael Jackson. No excessive coverage out here.
My neighborhood is the definition of the middle of nowhere, but I just felt compelled to let people know that Michael Jackson isn’t news EVERYWHERE! LOL!
