OK, this is clearly a vanity post and not that earth-shattering, but I thought I would share it in light of the recent cap-and-trade news. We are currently in the process of buying a home from some liberal Obama devotees. We don't know them at all, but it is abundantly clear from their bumper stickers, buttons, Obama inaugural pens, books etc.
Anyway, in the home inspection process of the negotiations, we discovered that the home has high levels of radon which need to be mitigated. The sellers refuse to pay for this correction which would be, roughly, $900. Now this isn't a deal-breaker for us. We'll take care of this ourselves. I just found it ironic that, had this been a business, these people would be the first ones picketing and accusing the business of poisoning children etc. I also find it ironic that, had this idiotic cap-and-trade legislation - that I can only assume they embrace- been in effect right now, the government would have mandated them to fix the problem before they could sell the house.
Now, I'm not saying that is what I want. We are adults and we are perfectly content to negotiate this on our own -- let the market decide. I just find it hypocritical that the owners aren't willing to do what they will mandate on everyone else.
Radon is a scam anyway, just like global warming.
Call the cops... attempted murder. Seriously, you’re talking about paying for added ventilation of the foundation system. You may need an active ventilation system under the house. It could get expensive... get 3 quotes from licenced contractors and present these to the sellers.. have them pay half.
Drop your offer. If they want to sell, they’ll bite.
Not a deal breaker, in this market? You jest! Bleed the libtards.
And after complying with the proposed federal mandates, the radon problem will be more severe due less air circulation.
I’m Catholic, so we’ll just have our parish priest exorcise it -— that’s free isn’t it? We tithe regularly. ;-)
I don’t know if it’s free or not, but being a Catholic myself, I think they will charge you—LOL!
Radon and global warming.....both scams.....
Wasn’t this radon thing based on some study done in a coal mine in China?
It’s a buyers market, save yourself the 900 bucks and stick it in an Obama voters eye.
Norway, I think. It is amazing how stupid people are by allowing themselves through fear and ignorance to be gullible enough to fall for such a hilarious scam, yet, they are way too serious about it.
As a home inspector I would rather not have to do radon testing but if I dont the buyers will get some one who will do the inspection and radon testing. Being certified to do radon testing involves a 16 hrs of continuing ed, annual callibration of equipment, and insurance. For what i can charge it is not worth the time involved.
Our house is up for sale. We added that we will NOT allow radon testing nor will we pay for any scam installation of a fan. If the buyer wants “radon remediation”, they can open a window after they close. I won’t let me or my property be scammed.
I am also amazed at how many real estate agents are in on it and get kickbacks from it all. One large agency, “Metro Brokers”, has as their primary home inspector a guy who runs a radon business. Their agents even install randon fans in new custom homes! Talk about a racket. We made an offer on a house of theirs but told them they would need to remove that POS and repair the home back to its original condition. It turned out that while they were busy putting in a fan in the basement they let the roof leak and ruin some walls. We pulled our interest.
“It takes a real liberal to buy into the Radon hoax.”

Tru’ ‘dat
Radon is an absolute scam, unless you live in an uranium mine. A total hoax.
HOWEVER - it can mess up resale value, because people will believe anything.
YMMV.
“they can open a window after they close”
If I sell a house, it is as is, where is. The buyer can make any improvement he likes, once he owns it.
I don’t know if it is a scam or not. As I said, it isn’t a deal-breaker for me. I’m just pointing out the hypocrisy of Obama fans who would mandate this on future sellers, but won’t pay for it themselves.
I would walk on a deal like that JUST BECAUSE they are Obama worshiping cheapskates... AND I would let them know that is the reason I am walking on the deal.
Ok. what you need to know going forward is that the radon levels you specified will not harm you or your family.
But also, that you must mitigate it, or your resale value is hosed.
As is theirs - so make them pay for it.
