Here’s my feedback—

It’s an awesome device, but I’m not buying one until they offer some type of unlimited access service with a monthly fee instead of paying $10/book.

But I’m broke too, so that affects my opinion.

I recommended it to some of my friends kids who are going off to college, kindle is trying to get a deal to download college books onto kindle at a reduced price..
Imagine having 20 college books on your kindle?

As a adult i would have no use for it,will not read books on internet..
If you do not have kids ,Regift....

I have one and love it. I had a large collection of ebooks that I converted to PDF and emailed to my “kindle” account and can now read these books all the time. I have also purchased a few books from Amazon (including Mark Levin’s latest and greatest).

It’s not the same as holding a book in your hand, turning pages, etc, but if you travel as lot (as I do) and commute by rail (as I do) and find yourself with a lot of downtime you will find yourself reaching for the Kindle.

One of the “hidden” features is an experimental web browser. That is it’s not exactly a Firefox or IE, but it allows you to read websites like FR as long as you are within the coverage area of the Sprint Whispernet (the network that Amazon uses for delivering books) you will have high speed internet for surfing FR. This feature alone makes the kindle worth it (In my opinion).

That being said, if money is tight you ultimately have to make the choice on whether a gadget is the right thing for you now.

The Kindle is an unusual gadget in that it does not obviously target young people, or early-adopting technophiles. Instead it appeals to passionate readers, who want no fiddling with cables (the Kindle works without a computer) or complicated pricing plans (Kindle users pay to buy books and other content, but do not have to pay wireless-subscription fees). It is, in short, perfect for older people. The Kindle is a surprisingly “conservative” device, says John Makinson, the boss of Penguin Group, a large book publisher, so it is an additional distribution channel and thus “good for us”.

A friend has it and loves it. You can adjust the print size which is great for tired or ‘old’ eyes.

She travelled to South America recently and put some good books in her Kindle.

The Kindle is fantastic! Don’t even think of sending it back.

You can get all sorts of books at the Amazon website - incidentally, the best selling download last week was Mark Levin’s book! - and there are also many free or nearly free books you can get at other sites. Books are easy to get and are download literally in seconds.

You can look up words while you’re reading and highlight passages you like and make a clipping file. You can also increase the text size if you have any visual problems at any point.

I love it! I have several books on it that I only read when I’m traveling, but even when I’m not traveling, I find it extremely comfortable to sit down and spend the evening with it. I have found that there’s less eyestrain with the Kindle than with a regular book.

The help screens are good and Amazon has nice website help, but there’s a book called the “Kindle Cookbook” that will explain a lot of things to you. It’s not very expensive and it’s available on the Amazon site, of course!

Upgrade your Kimb from the “le” model to the “er” model. It costs about $900 more but it’ll be worth it in the long run. :)

I enjoy my Kindle better than I ever thought I would. I also read so much more now than I used to. I can recommend it without reservation. While many books are in the $10 range, many, many more are a dollar, a couple of dollars, or even free. A lot of these cheaper books are ones out of print. Each Kindle 2 will hold ~1500 books, and I've loaded mine with about 100 WWI and WWII memoirs, and personal accounts of 19th Century explorers, cowboys and Indians, and the like, mostly out of print, and each costing only a few bucks and sometimes for free. Add to that collections of Shakespeare, Twain, Poe, Defoe, Conrad, and Homer purchased for not more than $3.00 each.

The Kindle is easy to read: you can adjust the type size to suit your eyes, and when you click on a book, it picks up right where you left off. You can skip around as much as you like and never loose your place. When you have an itch for something new, it connects directly with Amazon wirelessly for free, and lets you browse to your heart's content. When you find something you'd like, click it, your account is billed, and your new book is downloaded within a minute. This is the way of the future.

An acquaintance (huge liberal) has one.

They really like it - it helps if you like books and newspapers - that’s really what the appeal is. The screen as you’ve seen is a non-backlit paper white, which is supposed to mimic reading the pages of a book.

One pretty neat feature. If you like the limited assortment of websites which are built in - it’s free websurfing.

But the number of participating webpages are limited I think.

I’ll go way out on a limb here and guess, more liberals have them than conservatives?

But I don’t know that. Just seems sort of a “bookstore and paperstand” market to this poster.

If it’s $300 you can’t afford, and you’re not even sure you want it, you really shouldn’t need any outside help to figure out whether or not you should return it.

My husband gave me the Kindle 1 for Mother’s Day a year ago. I loved it. He gave me the Kindle 2 when it came out so I could have the newer one and he took the Kindle 1. Now we can share books.

I used to take a bag filled with books on every trip. Now I slip the Kindle into my purse and go. We cruise a lot and with the new weight limits on flying, I would rather pay for clothes than books.

The bad thing is that when I watch TV and a good book is recommended I can download it at once and begin reading. That could get costly, but you can get free books on feedbooks.com. They have a lot of classics

I also keep up with freerepublic on the whispernet while traveling. However, you can’t get the whole article that is cited if it sends you off freerepublic.

I love the ability to look up the meaning of a word I don’t know. You just move the “cursor” to the word and the meaning pops up. You can search for a word and it will find every time the word is used in all your books. You can also search Wikipedia and Google.

I have a kindle reader through my iTouch (too cheap to get an iPhone). I think it’s cool and probably worth it if you travel and need to keep up with reading (I’m a prof, I’m reading all the time) or don’t want to haul a bunch of books around with you on vacation, etc.

I ended up buying some classics for .99 on an iTouch app. I just finished Call of the Wild and am reading Flatland. I wasn’t sure if I’d like reading this way, but it looks so much like reading from a book, it’s no problem. I imagine a Kindle would be even better because of the larger screen size.

As a prof, I have access to a lot of books thru my school’s library, so so far, I’ve only ‘test driven’ some Kindle books and have decided not to buy what I can get from the library. But, the idea of not hauling books around on the plane is a pretty compelling one and at some point I will probably break down and get Kindle books to read on the iTouch.

Keep it for a bit and see if you like it. Most folks commenting on a ‘Should I get a Kindle’ thread on a professor board said that they really liked it and find it very useful, but again, we profs do a lot of reading.
