Sheriff says deputies were justified in shooting mayor's dogs

Prince George's County Sheriff Michael Jackson said Friday deputies acted "in a professional and acceptable manner" when they shot two dogs inside the home of Berwyn Heights Mayor Cheye Calvo last summer. During a press conference Friday morning in which Jackson made public selected details from an internal investigation, he said, "The release of today's findings are consistent with what I've felt all along — my deputies did their job to the fullest extent of their abilities."

Calvo has filed complaints that police and deputies needlessly shot the dogs when they raided his house on July 29, 2008, after mistakenly believing that the home was linked to an illegal marijuana shipping racket. Calvo was later cleared of any involvement in drug activity, and police linked the 32-pound package of marijuana that was listed for delivery at the Calvo home to a Fed-Ex courier and arrested him.

Reached Friday, Calvo said the investigation's conclusion that deputies followed procedure misses the point. "They're turning what was horrible judgment into a model operation," Calvo said by phone. "That this is the best they can do? That's disturbing." The raid sparked an outcry in the community and among state leaders, who last winter passed a bill requiring law enforcement agencies to track and report the activities of their SWAT team units, including how often guns are fired and when animals are killed. National groups have taken up the case as an example of overly aggressive police tactics in the national drug war. Calvo's lawyers have also filed notice for a potential lawsuit against the county police and sheriff's office, which served the warrant on behalf of the police. A spokesman for Jackson said that Calvo's lawyers could seek up to $5 million.

Hey Calvo! Beat it.

Methinks Mr Jackson needs to join the crowd of the uneployed.

Your right, it started under Ronald Reagan, who was actually a libertarian conservative, but he built a coalition that included the southern yellow dog democrat... We all know what that means... He did run on a Law and Order basis but it has turned into swarms and swarms of cops and everybody is a criminal of some kind who just hasn’t been caught yet.

I am a registered republican, and have been registered that way my whole life but I don’t know that I can say that anymore. But yes, fiscal conservatives, who believed strongly in “moral issues” built the police state.

If memory serves they were labs.

You got it. Many years ago when I was in college in the 80’s a police officer was elated that they could take your car or house for having drugs. It went down hill from there. It is all about money.

I hope the mayor sues the police chief. I also hope he raises an adversory to vote this guy out of office. The all hang together. Shooting labs is just unacceptable.

Law and order is fine. But the failed war on some drugs does more to break down law and order than it does to promote it.

No disrespect meant to Reagan. He thought he was doing the right thing, and the precedent for the failed drug war preceded Reagan by several decades.

My two 90 lb. Golden Retrievers would lick them to death. Guard dogs they’re not.

However, my wife (a very non-violent person) would go for her Glock if anyone threatened the dogs.

If I remember correctly, they were Labs. And one was running away from them when it was shot. I remember they handcuffed the M-i-L and left her to lay on the floor for several hours next to one of the dead dogs.

Shooting labs is just unacceptable.

Agreed. One of my big fears is that my little toy fox terrier will be hurt or killed in a break in or a "no knock"search on the wrong house. Honestly, I don't see how I could move on from something like that. It would haunt me for many years. I care about my animals like they were my children.

President Reagan was a nationalist conservative not a libertarian conservative. American conservatives inherently have libertarian values. European and Latin American conservatives don't

The “War On Drugs” began under Nixon, not Reagan, though Reagan did escalate it - mostly for nationalistic reasons. He used it in an effort to choke off funding to communist insurgents in Colombia and elsewhere as part of the wider effort to turn back communism. As is the case with most wars in history the unintended consequences diminished many of the benefits.

The failed drug war is a war on you.

It always has been and it always will be.

I can't even post what I'm thinking about the cops who pulled the trigger.

Ok I need to go to school here on your definitions of nationalist conservative. His GE speeches where libertarian in nature. I agree he was a Nationalist in that he had a “big goal” to bring down the commies, and lesser goals could suffer for that end. I am not sure that a Nationalist Conservative is inherently libertarian... But I could be wrong.

I’m not a big believer in hyphenated conservatism period.

Reagan was a nationalist. He believed in a sovereign United States that could defend herself against all comers and was not above using American power overseas, from Grenada to Libya, to protect American interests around the world. Libertarians oppose the use of American power except in defense of our own territory.

Reagan respected the contributions of immigrant people but expected them to adopt American customs and culture. He also believed in carefully regulated immigration, in contrast to the most doctrinaire Libertarians who support no restrictions at all. I personally believe one of his worst mistakes was the 1986 illegal alien amnesty - one of the times he followed his libertarian leanings as opposed to his nationalist leanings.

Reagan believed in free trade but he also believed in fair trade. He imposed high tariffs on Japanese motorcycles when it was determined that they were dumping their products here at below cost. He used this fact to encourage Japan to restrain their dumping steel as well. These were not libertarian things to do.

American conservatives respect American traditions. That includes the libertarian roots of our founding. When I speak of American conservatives as being inherently libertarian, that’s what I mean.

That is not saying much! If you do not know what are their abilities?

I remember when this first happened, and there is no way this was professional or acceptable.
