Apple's New iPhone Set To Heat Up Phone War

Apple's new iPhone set to heat up phone war

The battle for dominance of the lucrative "smartphone" market will step up a gear on Monday as Apple is widely expected to launch a new version of the iPhone.

By Rupert Neate 07 Jun 2009

The new iPhone is so important to Apple that Steve Jobs, the chief executive, is expected to return from sick leave to attend the launch at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco.

Mr Jobs, who has previously battled against pancreatic cancer, went on medical leave in January suffering from a hormonal imbalance.

The company refused to confirm or deny whether or not Mr Jobs would be attending the conference, but said he is due back at work by the end of the month. Apple said Philip Schiller, its chief marketing officer, will give the key note speech.

Photos purporting to show the new iPhone were leaked on the internet over the weekend.

The handset is expected to have a 3.2-megapixel camera, compared with the current 2-megapixel camera, a built-in compass and rubber-tread backing.

Other photos show the device has a front-facing video camera to allow customers to engage in two-way video conversations.

The article is basically repeating rumors the author deemed plausible enough to include.

I really don't know why anyone would really want to go back to a physical keyboard ( unless they're a die hard Blackberry user ).

To be fair, the virtual keyboard has dodgy accuracy.

Since iPhone OS 3.0 allows an application to interact with an accessory plugged into the bottom port, I can see third parties releasing physical keyboards. Whether or not those keyboards can be used in the Apple-created apps (Mail, Safari, etc) remains to be seen.

I would only be tempted to get the new one (love mine now) if it had replaceable batteries for those long days.

The accuracy with my virtual keyboard has been fairly good.

I have to laugh because the Gizmodo review said that the Pre's touchscreen is better, overall, than the iPhone's. But that little keyboard I just couldn't get into.

Someone tried to tell me how great the Nokia x-71 was, but I didn't like its keyboard either. I'm now too used to the iPhone's virtual model. It's sort of like driving on a nice open highway, then going off-road on a dirt path.

I'm perfectly happy with my trusty rotary phone. Who needs this new-fangled technology? Bah humbug.

I'm one of those people who spends over a hundred a month on my cell phone plan. I have five phones on the plan, for my wife, daughters and my mom. I like the idea that if any of them are caught out or the car breaks down, they can get ahold of me. My mom likes to talk to her sister, who lives a couple of hundred miles away. Because they're both on ATT, there's no minute or long distance charge, so they can talk for a couple of hours a day with no LD charges. They're in their late 70s, and it means a lot to them.

My iPhone is a business expense, and I use it for phone, email, and when I'm photographing on location, it functions as a GPS, and Google maps is like having a complete collection of city and state maps in my pocket. When I buy something for the business, I take a photo of the receipt, and it automatically downloads onto my computer. It makes tracking receipts a lot easier. When I'm out on the road, I can access the net from anywhere if I need information from the web.

I use the iPod function to listen to books on tape while driving to photograph games. I've also been using a level application that functions as a plumb or level. I've got about fifty books on it, so I can read if I wish while waiting for something. In keeping my contacts straight, the nice thing is that I can create a new contact, take a photo of them, and it automatically synchs with my computer, so I've got my address book with me all the time.

Different people have different needs, but I find that I make more money responding to people quickly, even if I'm on the road. And I like making money.

Great!, because I'm on my 8th iPhone since they came out, and it's a POS.

The virtual keyboard isn’t bad, but it can be hit or miss. I like it overall, especially when it means a clean and compact physical design, but it does frustrate me every so often.

The Pre’s keyboard is definitely too small. I think Palm’s decision to try to make something smaller than the iPhone backfired on them, the next one should be larger to accommodate a better keyboard, if they want to go that route.

iPhone rumor and speculation masquerading as news... PING!

With Apple, expected and will happen are not necessarily a sure thing...

Great, because I'm on my 1st iPhone since they came out, and it's not a POS.

Mine *makes* me money.

I’m going to take a guess and say that you’re probably over 50 and only recently discovered computers, having previously thought they were “toys for adults”.

Sell me your iPhone if it is such a POS. I’ve been looking for a cheap one to hack and send to my parents.

We are still on the first one "since they came out". Methinks you smell of troll.

After the third one, I would have gone to a different phone altogether. Any sane person would have.

I'm still on my first and love it.

I’ve dropped my landline entirely for a pay-as-you-go cell phone. I’m saving a lot of money, and my phone is set up so that it only rings for people on my whitelist. In between calls I have a dandy pocket computer. (Guess what I’m posting this reply from?)

No more landlines for me.

I'm perfectly content with my wall phone at home.

I'm just appalled that we no longer get the operator to hook us up to the party we want to call. This whole "dial it yourself" thing has just gotten out of hand!
