Apple's new iPhone set to heat up phone war
The battle for dominance of the lucrative "smartphone" market will step up a gear on Monday as Apple is widely expected to launch a new version of the iPhone.
By Rupert Neate 07 Jun 2009
The new iPhone is so important to Apple that Steve Jobs, the chief executive, is expected to return from sick leave to attend the launch at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco.
Mr Jobs, who has previously battled against pancreatic cancer, went on medical leave in January suffering from a hormonal imbalance.
The company refused to confirm or deny whether or not Mr Jobs would be attending the conference, but said he is due back at work by the end of the month. Apple said Philip Schiller, its chief marketing officer, will give the key note speech.
Photos purporting to show the new iPhone were leaked on the internet over the weekend.
The handset is expected to have a 3.2-megapixel camera, compared with the current 2-megapixel camera, a built-in compass and rubber-tread backing.
Other photos show the device has a front-facing video camera to allow customers to engage in two-way video conversations.

Anyone care to hazard a guess, as to when the first instance of video-conferencing-while-driving occurs?

I’m perfectly content with my base-line Motorola phone from Verizon.
The ride home from the store from somewhere on the east coast probably between two people who rode together.
I can’t imagine the excitement if Jobs showed up to give the keynote. Somehow it is hard to get excited about Phil Schiller doing it.
Steve is coming back! Yip!
How nice!
The salesman did not say one word about this prior to my purchase last week. geez.
They rarely do. Always look here before buying an Apple product. No other company has people digging so much into its product timelines. Dell or Motorola could drop their prices tomorrow and you'd never know, but you have a good chance of knowing whether you should wait to buy an Apple product.
I have had an iPhone since day-one. I think it is the best device ever. Can’t wait for the new gen phone. However, I have seen no mention that it will be 4g compatible.
Good for you.
Uh oh. Either they are going with the rumor or somebody let the cat out of the bag.
I'm perfectly content with my wall phone at home. Plus, I save the hundreds of dollars a month these overpriced toys for “adults” cost.
Is everyone so important that they have to be yacking 24/7 on these things?
I’m hoping to change mine to pay-as-you-go. It does help if you get lost, I’ll attest to that.
I was thinking customers could participate in an orgy without being there.
Thanks for the link. If I recall the BestB salesman said 30 return policy.
Thanks! That’s a useful link...
Had a chance to play around with the new Palm Pre yesterday. Did not like it as much as the iPhone. The screen resolution is great, but the screen area is too small, and so is the retractable keyboard.
I think the iPhone's screen area and virtual keyboard are just right. And when they finally introduce the landscape mode for email, notes, Calendar, and messaging, I really don't know why anyone would really want to go back to a physical keyboard ( unless they're a die hard Blackberry user ).
I think the 4G comes out in 2010.
