WHEN GOD MADE FATHERS

When the good Lord was creating Fathers, He started with a tall frame. An angel nearby said, "What kind of a Father is that? If you're going to make children so close to the ground, why have you put the Father up so high? He won't be able to shoot marbles without kneeling, play pretend drinking tea, and kiss dolly goodnight, tuck a child in bed without bending, or even kiss a child without stooping?" God smiled and said, "Yes, but if I make him child size, who would children have to look up to?"

And when God made a Father's hands, they were large. The angel said, "Large hands can't manage diaper pins, small buttons, rubber bands on pony tails, or even remove splinters caused from baseball bats." Again God smiled and said, "I know, but they're large enough to hold everything a small boy empties from his pockets and a little girls paper dolls and jump rope, and to teach her to turn cartwheels, yet small enough to cup a child's face in them."

Then God molded long slim legs and broad shoulders, "Do you realize you just made a Father without a lap?" the angel chuckled. God said, "A Mother needs a lap. A Father needs strong shoulders to pull a wagon, to balance a bicycle, or to hold a sleepy head on the way home from the circus."

When God was in the middle of creating the biggest body any one had ever seen, the angel said, "That's not fair. Do you honestly think that form is going to get out of bed early in the morning when the baby cries, or walk through a birthday party without crushing one or two of the guests?" God again smiled and said, "It will work. You will see. It will support a small child who wants to ride to Banbury Cross or scare mice away from a summer cabin , or walk in shoes that will be a challenge to fill."

God worked throughout the night, giving the Father few words, but a firm authoritative voice; eyes that see everything, but remain calm and tolerant. Finally, almost as an afterthought, He added tears. Then he turned to the angel and said, "Now are you satisfied he can love as much as a Mother can?" The angel said nothing more.

Thank you for your compliments. That last one I posted makes me cry every time I read it! I’m just blubbery with my tears anyway!

Thank you for your lovely opening and reply posts to me and everyone!

I still think of my precious father on Father’s Day, he was such a gentle man. He hardly ever raised his voice. And of course I think of and miss my husband and son’s father very much, who was a terrific husband and as good a father as anyone could ask for. I am thankful for the many years we had together and also thankful to the good Lord for the good things in life that I still enjoy. God Bless you, Meg!

I love anything teriyaki, JC. If I can’t decide what to prepare for a meal, I can always cook up a pot of steamed rice, put either sliced ny strip steak (or any tender steak) or sliced simmered chicken breast over it, and a couple spoons of teriyaki. (Chicken bowl or beef bowl). Maybe some steamed broccoli on the side. Easy and perfect dinner.

JC, that is a lovely graphic.

My dad passed away a little over a year ago. Since his birthday was in the middle of June, he always got spoiled, with double gifts, phone calls, cards - and double the love.

Happy Father’s Day to all our Dad’s here.

Things a dad would never say

Top Ten Things You’ll Never Hear a Dad Say

10. Well, how ‘bout that?... I’m lost! Looks like we’ll have to stop and ask for directions.

9. You know Pumpkin, now that you’re thirteen, you’ll be ready for unchaperoned car dates. Won’t that be fun?

8. I noticed that all your friends have a certain “up yours” attitude ... I like that.

7. Here’s a credit card and the keys to my new car — GO CRAZY.

6. What do you mean you wanna play football? Figure skating not good enough for you, son?

5. Your Mother and I are going away for the weekend ... you might want to consider throwing a party.

4. Well, I don’t know what’s wrong with your car. Probably one of those doo-hickey thingies — you know — that makes it run or something. Just have it towed to a mechanic and pay whatever he asks.

3. No son of mine is going to live under this roof without an earring — now quit your belly-aching, and let’s go to the mall.

2. Whaddya wanna go and get a job for? I make plenty of money for you to spend.

1. Father’s Day? aahh — don’t worry about that — it’s no big deal.

Yorkie, thank you so much!

You were lucky to have your father so long. We all will always miss our Dads and Mothers but we miss them even more on the days we celebrate for them, don't you think? It just makes the memories more vivid in our minds on these days, I guess. My son's have called me this morning to tell me how much they miss Dad! I wished the one son "Happy Father's Day" to a wonderful son and good father! The youngest son had no children, just his cats, and they are gone now. He is the one who's divorced so at one time I said I was glad in a way they didn't have kids.

By the way, he has met some old high school girfriends on Facebook and has seen two of them. One lives in Indiana and is associated with Indianapolis 500. The other lives in Charlotte, NC. Both still have parents here so when they were in, he dated both. (not at the same time...lol!)

Thank you, (((jaycee)))
Father’s Day was an awful holiday to get through for me after my husband died many years ago.
I am happy to be able to count my blessings now that I had such a wonderful, loving father for my children and wonderful Dad.
Now the torch is passed to my lovely son and son in law.
I pray my 4 grandsons can be such good fathers, too.someday.

Our Legacy
Children are a heritage from the Lord. —Psalm 127:3

A friend of mine wrote recently, “If we died tomorrow, the company that we are working for could easily replace us in a matter of days. But the family left behind would feel the loss for the rest of their lives. Why then do we invest so much in our work and so little in our children’s lives?”

Why do we sometimes exhaust ourselves rising up early and going late to rest, “eating the bread of anxious toil” (Ps. 127:1-2 esv), busying ourselves to make our mark on this world, and overlooking the one investment that matters beyond everything else—our children?

Solomon declared, “Children are a heritage from the Lord”—an invaluable legacy He has bequeathed us. “Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth” (v.4) is his striking simile. Nothing is more worthy of our energy and time.

There is no need for “anxious toil,” working night and day, the wise man Solomon proclaimed, for the Lord does take care of us (Ps. 127:2). We can make time for our children and trust that the Lord will provide for all of our physical needs. Children, whether our own or those we disciple, are our lasting legacy—an investment we’ll never regret.

Our children are a heritage,
A blessing from the Lord;
They bring a richness to our lives—
In each, a treasure stored. —Fasick

Time spent with your children is time wisely invested.

Daddy's Day by Cheryl Costello-Forshey

Her hair was up in a ponytail, her favorite dress tied with a bow.
Today was Daddy's day at school, and she couldn't wait to go.

But her mommy tried to tell her, that she probably should stay home.
For the kids might not understand, if she went to school alone.

But she was not afraid, she knew just what to say.
What to tell her classmates, of why he wasn't here today.

But still her mother worried, for her to face this day alone.
And that was why once again, she tried to keep her daughter home.

But the little girl went to school, eager to tell them all.
About a dad she never sees, a dad who never calls.

There were daddies along the wall in the back, for everyone to meet.
Children squirming impatiently, anxious in their seats.

One by one the teacher called, a student from the class.
To introduce their daddy, as seconds slowly passed.

At last the teacher called her name, every child turned to stare.
Each of them searching, for a man who wasn't there.

“Where's her daddy at?”, she heard a boy call out.
“She probably doesn't have one,” another student dared to shout.

And from somewhere near the back, she heard a daddy say,
“Looks like another dead beat dad, too busy to waste his day.”

The words did not offend her, as she smiled up at her Mom.
And looked back at her teacher, who told her to go on.

And with her hands behind her back, slowly she began to speak.
And out from the mouth of a child, came words incredibly unique.

“My daddy couldn't be here, because he lives so far away.
But I know he wishes he could be, since this is such a special day.”

“And though you cannot meet him, I wanted you to know.
All about my daddy, how much he loves me so.”

“He loved to tell me stories, he taught me to ride my bike.
He surprised me with pink roses, and taught me to fly a kite.”

“We used to share fudge sundaes, and ice cream in a cone.
And though you cannot see him, I'm not standing here alone.”

“’Cause my daddy's always with me, even though we are apart.
I know because he told me, he'll be forever in my heart.”

With that, her little hand reached up, and lay across her chest.
Feeling her own heartbeat, beneath her favorite dress.

And from somewhere in the crowd of dads, her mother stood in tears.
Proudly watching her daughter, who was wise beyond her years.

For she stood up for the love of a man not in her life.
Doing what was best for her, doing what was right.

And when she dropped her hand back down, staring straight into the crowd.
She finished with a voice so soft, but its message clear and loud.

“I love my daddy very much, he's my shining star.
And if he could, he'd be here, but heaven's just too far.

But sometimes when I close my eyes it's like he never went away.”
And then she closed her eyes and saw him there that day.

And to her mother's amazement, she witnessed with surprise.
A room full of daddies and children, all starting to close their eyes.

Who knows what they saw before them, who knows what they felt inside.
Perhaps for merely a second, they saw him at her side.

“I know you're with me daddy,” to the silence she called out.
And what happened next made believers, of those once filled with doubt.

Not one in that room could explain it, for each of their eyes had been closed.
But there on the desk beside her, was a fragrant long-stemmed red rose.

And a child was blessed, if only for a moment, by the love of her shining bright star.
And given the gift of believing, that heaven is never too far.
