Criminalizing Thought, Speech, & Opinion
Old Virginia Blog ^ | 30 May 2009 | Richard Williams

. . . this post is specifically in response to this particular historian's suggestion that those who interpret this aspect of history differently than he does should be charged criminally. My comments are only in response to that suggestion, and not to this individual personally.

Regarding the original post, the relevant comments made by this historian are:

"I’m not advocating jail time—at least not for most cases. It depends on the present-day goal for which one is abusing an essential historical truth."

“consensus” is whatever BO and the liberal media says it is.

Facts, Science, and truth have no place in the discussion.

This is a very disturbing article. I suggest everyone read it and get the info out far and wide.

The abuse of power is not related to party. I believe it accelerates when either party has complete control of government.

This fellow should have saved the keystrokes; it won't be long before speech of any kind not in concert with The One and his goals will be illegal. History and it's truths will be decided later

It's for the common good, don't you know.

When thinking is outlawed, only outlaws will have brains.

Seems to be close to reality anymore.

If you allow this type of stuff, (ex:"HATE SPEECH") to be criminalized you might as well say goodbye to the Idea Of America. Politically, you beat back the liars, socialist, anti-American's until they try to tear at the very foundation of freedom. Then that's where the physical battle has to start.

Criminalizing speech in America is an act of war.

There is a line each one of us draws. For some unjust reason conservatives representatives have this uncanny ability NOT to act on crucial anti-American agenda's until they are forced too, and then it's too late.

The article where the suggestion was raised, The UDC, Black Confederates, and the Manipulation of the Past, had a commenter named Tim Lacy advocating that laws like European "Holocaust denial" laws, be enacted in the US to cover people who have politically incorrect opinions about 19th Century slavery in the South.

The writer was incensed about the idea that anybody would claim that blacks had freely served in the Confederate Army. (BTW, it is historical record that blacks did serve in the Confederate Army).

WHY do you believe this?

When have Republicans ignored facts, science, and truth in pursuit of a political agenda?

You are correct. However, the context, in this case, is really irrelevant. It’s the very idea that anyone would even suggest criminalizing someone’s opinion. Utterly astounding.

The whole time they held all 3 branches. Their primary goal was retaining power. Sure, they made some good strides and are, generally, less statist than the dems, but they have quite a few statists and power-hungry PC types in their ranks as well.

Quit with the generalizations!

Cite an example of ignoring facts, science, and truth in pursuit of a political agenda!

Ignoring truth: Voting for Supreme Court justices that were not constructionists, supporting certain federal crime bills that compromised personal liberty, education bills that limited choice and took power from the states, centralizing power in Washington, campaign finance reform, medicare reform - Good Lord, where have you been for the last 8 years?

Really?
Which SCJ’s nominated in the last 8 years were not constructionists?
Which federal crime bills compromised personal liberty and which facts and truth did they ignore?
You’re spouting a list of policy grievances that are a matter of opinion, not facts and truth.

It's logical that they would want to try. Leftists don't do well in fair debate, so they have to shut down opinions that conflict with their agenda.
