Mom, Boy Who Fled Cancer Treatment Found
cbsnews ^ | May 25, 2009

A woman and her 13-year-old son who were on the run from court-ordered cancer treatment for the boy have returned to Minnesota, the Brown County Sheriff's Office said Monday.

"Daniel Hauser and his mother have been returned to Minnesota," according to a news release. It did not reveal any additional details, but said there would be a news conference Monday evening.

The FBI's affidavit in support of an arrest warrant for Colleen alleges she fled the state Tuesday to avoid being prosecuted on two state counts of depriving another of custodial or parental rights in Brown County.

The FBI said the pair flew from Minnesota to Los Angeles last Tuesday on Sun Country Airlines. Investigators suspected they might have headed to one of a number of alternative cancer clinics in northern Mexico.

From what I understand the cancer is 95% treatable if caught early (his was) and treated. He had one chemo treatment and it helped shrink the tumor. Since they stopped the tumor has grown according to the HIPAA regulated information the govt released.

It would be interesting if you stuck to the point, which is treatment for cancer - traditional or alternative.

As for cancer, there is no definitive treatment, so the state should butt out. You couldn't be more wrong. All cancers are not created equally. This particular form of cancer, Hodgkin's Lymphoma has a better than 90% cure rate. It's non-hodkin's lymphoma that is particularly deadly even with treatment.

The state NEVER has a place deciding medical treatments. This is still a free country. For now....

Child abuse is child abuse.

(I too am conflicted on this. At the end I must go with the health of the child.)

I disagree. I had a friend who was a nurse. She repeatedly told me that she would NEVER get chemo or radiation as treatment was barbaric.

Hubby had a friend who had cancer. They used clean stem cells and it killed that cancer cells. They then proceeded to kill his liver with chemo. He died of liver failure.

It should be the family's decision and not governments.

according to the HIPAA regulated information the govt released.

So, it's okay for the government to release PRIVATE medical information, but you try it!

Nope, you’re not free to kill your children, period, end of discussion.

The child is not being denied treatment, the family has chosen a different treatment path than what is generally used.

So if the kid had been riding his bike and was hit by a car and had broken bones, internal bleeding and a skull fracture, you would be okay with the parents electing to opt for "a different treatment path than what is generally used?"

The Father is for the treatment. The mother is against it.

The family is divided, that is one reason the state is involved.

The Father has parental rights too.

BTW, radiation treatment isn’t that bad at all. My sister-in-law was successfully treated for thyroid cancer with radiation with no side effects to speak of. My father’s prostate cancer was likewise treated with radiation and never resurfaced.

Some things are just not the government’s business. Medical treatment is one of them,. IF we want the government out of healthcare we need them out of our families/

According to the article, traditional treatment provides a 90% chance of survival. That is almost certain and better than the 5% chance of survival without it.

The State is stopping a murder of a child here, the same as my analogy of withholding food and drink.

So, if the family’s belief is that a child who is seen as possessed must be starved for 3 weeks, the State has no right to step in for the benefit of the child?

You got them on that one!

No it's not. This is still a free country and neither you nor the government has a right to tell others what treatment options they can take. It smacks of socialized medicine. Government interference in private issues is always wrong whether you agree with government or not.

He wasn’t denied treatment, he took treatment as you can obviously see from the photo.

He is tired of the chemo that doesn’t seem to be working and wanted to end it to live the best he could with what time he had left.

Denying this boy life-saving treatment is no different than starving him to death. It is absolutely the states business to step in if a parent is killing a child by neglect.
