No excuses: Redskins need a new nickname

E(mail) Last Friday, in a judicial decision that hinged on a legal technicality, the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., upheld the right of the local pro football team to keep its unconscionable nickname.

Gloated team attorney Bob Raskopf, “It’s a great day for the Redskins and their fans and their owner, Dan Snyder.”

Alas, it was another shameful day for America.

In clinging to the most racially offensive moniker held by a major U.S. professional sports team since the Emancipation Proclamation – yes, I know, since forever – the franchise continues to offend some Native Americans and assault the sensibilities of a citizenry that should be long past such insensitive and shallow depictions.

Their opinion was aborted before it reached fruition.

I have several close friends who are native americans and they say if half the energy spent on this PC nonsense was spent on helping their people they’d be much better off. 99 percent don’t give a flipping woo pee doo doo. Some are even honored.

Don’t screw with our name, we gave you casinos.

LOL, thanks for the laugh. This thread is amusing, particularly in view of the tagline I started using in the last week or so.

The only people who are more perpetually outaged than muslims, are liberals.

I find it offensive that a team based in Massachusetts is called the Patriots.

Flunked history, did ya? Boo Hoo.

As someone who knows a thing or two about using offensive logos or avatars, I am truly offended that a self-appointed group can claim "offense" and deploy the federal law to deprive the user of an avatar of their property rights in that image merely because they are offended.

This is the very institutionalization of racism. It invests in any eccentric group the power to control free speech. Michael Savage has experienced this in Great Britain. Garrett Wilders is going on trial in the Holland and in each instance it is because a group claims that they are offended and have sicced the government on their enemies.

I am offended by people who would steal my Constitution from me.

Then let the Native Americans and those who's sensibilities are offended root for the Cowboys.

It is pretty amazing that the “most offensive mniker in history” is only offending “some” Native Americans.

As a Native American I have no problem with the name.

I was born in Lynn, MA, a part of the U.S.A.

Thus I am a Native American.
