As he prepares to step into the role of Doctor Who, Matt Smith is just months away from becoming a major star, continuously stalked by the paparazzi, Whovians, et al.
But, for now, he is keeping a low profile in the French Riviera, as he promotes the short film Together, which opened Critics' Week at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday.
The 26-year-old star has bundles of charm. I am under strict instructions not to ask questions about the new series of Doctor Who (his agent hovers close by, growling), so I try a leftfield approach: No, he did not travel to the French Riviera in his Tardis, Smith reliably assures me.
He came on board his private jet with John Travolta in the pilot seat.
OK, so it was a budget airline, but at least he has a sense of humour. On this showing, it can be hoped that Smith will retain David Tennant's ebullient approach to the role of The Doctor, rather than returning to Christopher Ecclestone's darker portrayal.
And no, he has yet to meet any Doctor Who fans on the Croisette.
In fact, there is a quality of mischievousness to the young actor - a lightness and an energy that echo Tennant. Though Smith has plenty of his own style, not least a flock of hair that is rapidly becoming his own personal motif.

And he landed in the can? What did he do...oh, he’s from the UK where anything the towelheads complain about can get you incarcerated.
Interesting looking fella, reminds me of a cross between the fourth doctor, Tom Baker and the eighth doctor, Paul McGann.
Being a rather recent Dr. Who fan “my” Dr. Who has been David Tennant (although I started with Christopher Eccleston).
Are there debates about which was “best” like there are for James Bond?
Cross the James Bond debates with the religious, sci-fi obsession of Trekkers and you have a fraction of the Dr. Who nerd debates. :->

Yikes!
“Are there debates about which was best like there are for James Bond?”
There is no debate, it’s Tom Baker. Any one who disagrees with that is a infidel!!!
;-)
And Sarah Jane Smith (and K9) is the best companion.
No debate; Tom Baker! ;o)
At 26, Smith is three years younger than Peter Davison when he signed up to play the fifth Doctor in 1981.
peter davison was just horrible... and could arguably have been the reason the series started to die in the early to mid 80s. colin baker, tom's son, was brought in to try and save it... but the death blow had been struck.
eccleston did a fantastic job of reviving the series... brooding over his roll in the demise of the timelords. and now with tennant leaving, a shame really, we'll see how it lands this time.
i hope it does well... i'm definitely a revived fan.
and for ANYONE that hasn't seen the show... you MUST watch this episode: blink, #186 series 3 episode 10 (try to avoid the spoilers)
it's a fantastic episode and gives the first time viewer a proper seat as the mystery of what the show is about is revealed.
oh yea... and watch it on a dark night with the lights very low.. preferably on a windy and stormy night :)
LOL! I hadn’t read your post before my response. I’ll have to say there’s a toss-up for me re: Companions. I liked Sarah Jane, but I also liked Leela.

Heck YEAH! One of my favorite creepy and scary episodes.
That was a bad bit of casting. I really enjoyed him as Tristan, the younger brother of the veterinarian in "All Creatures Great and Small"
That's who he looks like to me.

Well, we have Martha
Oh, but there is also Rose.
Then.. the mystery companion from next season.
Martha fan myself, with Rose a close #2...
Ditto, Martha was the bomb.. and hotttttttt!
Tom Baker (#4) made the series. No doubt about it.
Jon Pertwee (#3) was reasonably good, as was the original, William Hartnell. I can’t remember the name of the #2 Dr. Who but he was annoying. Peter Davison (#5) was a tolerable twit, but after him ... forget it.
I used to stay up on Sundays nights for Pertweee, Baker and Davison (especially Baker). After that (e.g., Sylvester McCoy) forget it.
I still have a Tom Baker poster and scarf packed away somewhere in my basement. Enough of a Dr. Who Nerd?
