'Swine' in perspective: estimated 36,000 people die each year from the standard flu (100 per day)

From pediatrics.about.com...

Flu Season Update:
2008-2009 Flu Season
Vincent Iannelli, M.D.
Updated: April 11, 2009

[snip]

Flu Deaths:

Each year, the flu is reported to be responsible for almost 36,000 deaths [in the U.S.], including about 46 to 74 deaths in children. Last year, 83 deaths in children have already been reported to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System. Unfortunately, this is not unusual in a typical flu season.

There have been fifty-five influenza-associated pediatric death this season [2008-2009].

________________________________________________

From the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)...

"Every winter, tens of millions of people get the flu. Most are home, sick and miserable, for about a week. Some (mostly the elderly) die. We know the worldwide death toll exceeds a few hundred thousand people a year, but even in developed countries the numbers are uncertain, because medical authorities don't usually verify who actually died of influenza and who died of a 'flu-like illness.'..."

________________________________________________

From Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)...

How many people died from flu during the 2007-08 season?

Exact numbers of how many people died from flu this season cannot be determined. Flu-associated deaths (which have laboratory confirmed influenza), are only a nationally notifiable condition among children; however not all pediatric influenza deaths may be detected and reported and there is no requirement to report adult deaths from influenza. In addition, many people who die from flu complications are not tested, or they seek medical care later in their illness when flu can no longer be detected from respiratory samples. However, CDC tracks pneumonia and influenza (P&I) deaths through the 122 Cities Mortality Reporting System. This system collects information each week on the total number of death certificates filed in each of the 122 participating cities and the number of death certificates with pneumonia or influenza listed as a cause of death. The 122 Cities Mortality Reporting system helps gauge the severity of a flu season compared with other years. However, only a proportion of all P&I deaths are influenza-related and, as noted, most flu deaths are not lab confirmed. Thus, this system does not allow for an estimation of the number of deaths, only the relative severity among different influenza seasons. For the 2007-08 season, the proportion of deaths due to pneumonia and influenza was higher than the previous two years, but was similar to the 2004-05 season.

It is correct that we have no idea whether A/California/04/2009 is better, worse, or the same as seasonal influenza WITH REGARD TO MORTALITY.

Not to worry Peeps

More people died from the Bush and Reagan flus than might die from the obama flu

In obama we trust

“the CDC” (agency soon to be renamed to a less alarmist title, like the “Center for Disease Challenges”

True but the standard flu doesn’t make your lungs bleed until you die.

So why are people in high places acting so strange about the marrying of so many strains of viruses? I figured now that marriage can mean anything that it would suit fine in describing what appears to be the oddity of this particular outbreak.

“True but the standard flu doesn’t make your lungs bleed until you die.”

Especially if you’re age 20-45 and healthy before infection

The figures reflect deaths from winter flu. This flu is different.

Out of the 36,000 on average deaths per year related to influenza how many of these are in the age range 25-40? Isn’t that the really important figure to know?

While I understand not wanting people to panic, I'm not sure that the recent past is instructive regarding this flu.

I went to Kaiser yesterday to pick up my glasses, they are handing out masks to individuals who seem ill, having EVERYONE who touches a pen, a surface, use sanitizing lotion. I watched as an obviously ill man left the registration desk, the clerk closed her window and pulled out the cleaners and start wiping everything in her vicinity down. There were signs posted all over the clinic and boxes of masks and disinfectint on every desk. These medical professionals seem to be going to a big expense and effort for a standard flu. The lady who fitted my glasses spent more time warning me about the flu then she did advising me on my glasses, and they were my first pair..and they are progressives!

yep- mortality rate by age, and mortality rate by people receiving extreme treatment (ventilator),

and statistics relating to disease progression from onset to critical condition to death-

might put this flu in perspective with past experiences

I have no doubt that a number of elderly and those with immuno suppression and the unvaccinated and kids developiing secondary infections, have fallen in the past

Unfortunately for the Shuck and Jivester in Chief, people being fed this pap by the yellowstream media and Baghdad Bob Gibbs are not as dumb as he would need them to be

And, in Egypt, the arabs are killing all the pigs in the whole country! Of course, they didn’t really need an excuse to do this, but the “swine flu” is handy!

I know a person that works in a nursing home. I asked that person if there was word coming down to them from the state or feds regarding particular instructions in regards to the ‘new’ flu.

This person told me all they knew was from watching the news, nothing had be sent to them from anyone yet. I thought that was rather strange given all the supposed ‘hype’ the Jon Stewart media is reporting.

And yet what you describe seems to me there is a real ‘fear’ about something in particular. So much of this does not make sense to me.

I returned to work yesterday after a three day weekend and encountered much the same intensity. Training, instructions, and what seemed like a lot of overkill and fear.

SirKit and I were discussing yesterday an article he'd read explaining why so many young and healthy people died of the Spanish Flu. Apparently, when the flu virus hit, because their immune systems were strong, they went to work on the flu virus, but went out of control and started attacking healthy organs. Their own immune systems apparently were the cause of their deaths. Scary.
