The popular theory that dinosaurs were wiped out by an asteroid 65million years ago has been challenged.
It was believed the Chicxulub crater in Mexico was the 'smoking gun' of the mass extinction event.
Molten droplets from the ancient asteroid impact were found just below the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary - a geological layer of sediment linked with the extinction.
But soil samples from the 112-mile wide crater show the impact predates the disappearance of the dinosaurs by about 300,000 years.
The latest research has been published in the Journal of the Geological Society.
Study author Professor Gerta Keller from Princeton University suggested that the massive volcanic eruptions at the Deccan Traps in India may be responsible for the extinction, releasing huge amounts of dust and gases that could have blocked out sunlight and brought about a significant greenhouse effect.

Does this mean scientists were WRONG?????
No way that they know that for a fact. That’s only 1/2% error. Even carbon 14 is not that accurate.
If you really want to hear a paleontologist hissy fit, ask about Paleocene dinosaurs.
Dinosaurs were well on their way out long before the asteroid impact. From what I’ve read the number of species had dwindled to a tiny fraction of what they were a million years before.
Climate change probably played a big part. Also there’s evidence that there may have been some kind of intense radiation burst from space around that time as well.
As Bob Bakker says “I don’t buy that an asteroid could take out a T-Rex but leave a turtle untouched”.
We all know that an asteroid did not wipe out the dinosaurs. The evidence clearly shows that they all died out after electing a third generation Marxist who immediately spent the world into insolvency, seized control of the banks, and implemented single payer dinosaur health care. Within a few years, they were all dead.
Yah.. I remember that the guy with the ponytail (Robert Bakker) argued that toward the end of the cretaceous land bridges formed between continents that had been isolated (hence their fauna isolated) for over 100M yrs.. diseases wiped out most species, 90% of the dinos were triceratops at the end..
Yeah that’s right I don’t remember hardly any dinosaurs around when that asteroid hit.
NO! Of course not. Perish the thought.
They just have new right theories to replace old right theories.
Probably the same one I saw. The asteroid may have finished them off but dinosaurs were on their way out long before the impact.
Would you believe that Bakker is a Pentacostal minister?
The story here is, Gerta Kelly has been peddling this for years, has been wrong about it, and tries to push it through with press releases.
New blow for dinosaur-killing asteroid theory
