Budget Shortfall Forces Bronx Zoo To Evict Animals, Close Exhibits

New York, New York (AHN) - Banks, automakers, and insurance companies aren't the only ones suffering from the country's economic woes. Turns out the recession is causing hundreds of animals to be evicted from the Bronx Zoo as well.

On Thursday, zoo officials-facing tightened budgets-told a New York City Council committee that they would need to send away deer, bats, foxes, antelopes and other animals to replacement zoos around the country.

In light of a $15 million budget shortfall, Bronx zoo officials say they're also closing four exhibits at the 114-year-old Bronx Park zoo. With more than 2 million visitors last year, the Bronx zoo is the country's largest.

According to the report, among the closing exhibits is the World of Darkness, which includes bats, porcupines and primates including night monkeys, as well as three other exhibits home to antelope, deer and a South American relative of the llama.

I went to the Bronx Zoo and it was great. Best zoo I’ve ever been to.

The Zoo was the last great thing in the Bronx, been there off and on for 60 + years. That world of night exhibit was virtually unique, and a large percent of the world’s wildlife is nocturnal.

Went to the Bronx Zoo on a regular basis when living in NYC. It is a beautiful place. It’s sad that any part of this national treasure is closing.

How many animals could be saved if just 1% of the tax largess to ACORN was redirected?

Next thing they'll close is the neighborhood firehouse, they'll threaten to lay off half the police department and cut the number of buses and subways that are running during the week.

They'll do all these thing to scare the public in acquiescing to higher taxes.

Personally they could do all of those damn things and I wouldn't shed a tear.

“That world of night exhibit was virtually unique, and a large percent of the world’s wildlife is nocturnal.”

I find that interesting, too...though I have all the bats I need in this old 1906 farm house I live in, thank you, LOL!

The Milwaukee County Zoo has a great exhibit like this, and even the Henry Vilas Zoo in ‘The People’s Republik of Madistan’ has a small nocturnal house.

I truly only WANT a very small amount of things from Government:

1. Protect and DEFEND my Constitutional Rights.
2. Fire, Police & EMT service.
3. Road Repair in the summer, snowplowing in the winter.
4. Pick up the Trash.

I can handle everything else, thanks!

Jerks.
