CHICAGO - Former Chicago Bears defensive lineman William The Refrigerator Perry is in serious condition at a South Carolina hospital, a spokeswoman said Tuesday.
Perry, 46, was hospitalized to deal with complications from Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a chronic inflammation disorder of the peripheral nerves, the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune reported.
Aiken Regional Medical Center spokeswoman Melissa Summer declined to give additional details Tuesday.

I hate to ask this, but was there rumour years ago that he had died? I was seriously surprised to read he was still alive.

I thought he was dead. Did he have a brother that died, maybe?

I think he has had this disease for quite sometime. I remember reading some news last year that he was hospitalized for five months due to the effects of Guillain-Barré syndrome, which affects the peripheral nervous system and causes progressive weakness. He was in a wheelchair for a while.

Oh man. He has a very rough fight facing him. That disorder is bad news and he'll likely be on a respirator for a while. Being “The Refrigerator” he'll have to get rid of some weight to ever possibly walk again. Guillain-Barre Syndrome has a couple of cousin disorders like Polio and Transverse Myelitis. All the above work on damaging or destroying the Myelin nerve sheaths.

He was in a wheelchair for a while. I'm not sure when he contacted it. It likely made him an incomplete quadriplegic. That simply means all four limbs or upper and lower limbs affected even though he may or may not be able to walk. If he is still in the wheel chair there's a number of possibilities on the complications.
