I think he has had this disease for quite sometime. I remember reading some news last year that he was hospitalized for five months due to the effects of Guillain-Barré syndrome, which affects the peripheral nervous system and causes progressive weakness. He was in a wheelchair for a while.

I'm not sure when he contacted it. It likely made him an incomplete quadriplegic. That simply means all four limbs or upper and lower limbs affected even though he may or may not be able to walk. If he is still in the wheel chair there's a number of possibilities on the complications.
