I am the owner of the lake located behind the old Rockmart High School on College Street.
A few weeks ago I observed that there was something floating at the top of my lake and I called my grandson to come check out the situation.
When my grandson arrived at my house, he and one of his friends floated out in the lake to see what it was. Once he was out in the boat, he realized that it was an injured carp that I had purchased when the fish was only 8 inches long.
He and his friend pulled the fish out of the water with a net to see what was wrong with the fish.
After observing the fish, they noticed that one of the fins was severely damaged and needed medical attention.
I wasnt sure how to go about aiding an injured fish, but definitely wanted to. I asked my grandson to put it back in the water and we would figure out a way to help the fish.
A couple of days later, my grandson came back and was going to attempt to aid the fishs fin, but the fish could not be found at the top of the lake anymore.
Thinking that the fish had just passed away, we thought nothing else about it.
Next thing I know, I had some of my friends calling with questions regarding a fish that was caught out of my lake that was on the front of The Rockmart Journals sports section. Come to find out, it was the same fish that was injured.
Dear editor:
I dont think that it is very sportsmanlike to catch a fish that was injured and unable to put up a fight. A fish that can only swim with one fin and floating at the top of the water shouldnt be that much of a struggle.
If the fish wouldnt have been injured, it wouldve taken a lot bigger of a fishing pole than the fisherman used.
The fisherman claimed it took over 30 minutes to reel in the injured fish, but that is hard to believe when my grandson pulled the fish out of the water with his bare hands and a net!
I was very bothered that someone would go out of their way to catch an injured fish that cant even swim properly and then have the audacity to submit it to the newspaper for publication.

This sounds like Carp!
When I was about 15 I brought home 15 or so carp that I had shot and was going to put them in my mom’s gardens. I put them in a wheel barrel in the back yard and didn’t get back to them for five days. My dad wasn’t too happy with the stink, flies and maggots back there. He made me dispose of them by myself.
We would have to dispose of them or the Hmongs would take them.
I’ve played thousands of rounds of golf, but the most fun I’ve ever had was at the 9-hole course in Rockmart.
I did a short stint in Hanau, Germany which is just outside of Frankfurt and the hometown of the Brothers Grimm. One of the local delicacies was karpfen blau( blue carp)...which I found pretty tasty, if somewhat bony...
now that is a snapping turtle
Dunno, I've never seen that side of Bawney...
There are a bunch of 2-3 foot carp in the canal by our house. I can catch one within 10 minutes with balled-up bread dough on a #6 hook. They put up a nice fight.
They have a thick layer of putrid slime, so I just catch and release, holding them with my shoe while I unhook them, then kicking them back into the canal.
I hear that they are good if you pressure cook them, but no thanks.
I've seen black guys taking their large catch of large carp home. (But the last time I reported on black culture it turned into a flame war.) The carp in the lakes, rivers, and canals in the Phoenix area are GIGANTIC, and you can catch a bunch of them in a short amount of time. If you pressure cooked them and canned them, you'd be eating fish for a long time. I can't get over the slime, though.
Marinade the fillets in beer and/or vinegar. The meat is actually pretty good if you don't mind with bones.
The reason people pressure cook them is to make the bones soft enough to eat.
I almost exclusively trout-fish. Once I tried for bass and bluegill. Got this big fish, hoped it was a nice bass - but it had orange lips as I pulled it in....
Yep. Carp.
I threw it back, and later learned that some blacks and Asians think it’s quite the delicacy.
I’m sure that carp tastes fine, but nothing beats trout that was swimming around twenty minutes ago.
Oh man, now I’m really jonesing for some Jewish deli...just not a lot of that in South Carolina!
