The title caught my attention and caused me to pull this article (during a slow news period). Now that I read the article I realize it isn't really red meat for activists. In fact is seems rather like standard Democrat B.S. from any era, that with a few minor alterations could be made into standard Republican B.S. from any era.

Well, it is what I have for today.

Very interesting and it's fitting that another article talks about how the tax burden at the time was the highest in history. Elect Democrats, get higher taxes and liberal policy.

There was also a statement about how voters didn't like it when Democrats acted like "ersatz Republicans". That's exactly the problem with the GOP. They want to be Democrat lite instead of conservative.

tells others to get out... "When men are at variance with the course their party is taking, it seems to me there are only two honorable courses -- to join a party that more accurately mirrors their ideas, or to subordinate their prejudices and remain loyal."
IOW, the only reason one can disagree with FDR is their own prejudice. Thanks Homer_J_Simpson, love your list.

Pretty cool to look back and see what was really in people's minds at the time. Interesting that Roosevelt was so un-bipartisan. He was saying if you don't like the party's core principles, hit the road. Also interesting remarks from Alfred E. Smith that as late as ‘39 the country was still a mess. Shows Roosevelt hadn't fixed anything with the “New Deal”. Very revealing about the times.

On the contrary, HJS. It serves to highlight the slimy Roosevelting way he backhanded his opposition as being aginst progress....very instructive to our condition today...the way the socialist talk always about economic justice as opposed to economic liberty....wish the GOP would understand that you must ATTACK THE PREMISE OF SOCIALISM or you fall into the trap of being attacked as just a weaker version of the same thing......I now see why the GOP was so dispirited during the FDR era. We conservatives had better learn that lesson fast. Great Post !

That was Postmaster General Farley speaking:

"The long strugle to restore social and economic justice in America has offended certain financial overlords..." yada yada. Who needs churches or individual moral responsibility when we have the almighty state?

I picked up on Farley’s comments, too. Nowhere in the article did it say, in terms of policy, what it meant to be “liberal” or “conservative,” except in Farley’s comments.

“Social and economic justice” meant then what they mean today; social justice through buying votes of masses of government dependents. Economic justice is the redistribution of wealth from the producers to the government, so that they can fuel their social justice programs. FDR said that anyone who thought differently should be run out of the party.

This article makes it very clear that when someone says the modern democrat party is “not the party of your grand daddy,” you can bring up this article. Looks like the only way it’s different is that the purge has been completed.

My theory is, the NYT of that day, as today, was simply a house organ for the Democrat Party. So naturally, it would emphasize "Roosevelt's choice," (not to be confused with Hobson's Choice), without supplying any details about what issues were involved.

Odd though, how one issued did somehow mysteriously pop up. Who but the NYTimes could fail to "connect the dots" between the entirely "coincidental" increase over 11% in tax receipts with the corresponding 10% reduction in national income??

Nobody, except apparently our idiot Republicans of the time. Wonder if they (we!) are any smarter today? ;-)

That would be chump change for our social engineering rulers today. But I imagine even 22% was a big betrayal of the promises made by the originators of the income tax.

You're really digging into the archives here. It took me a minute to orient myself.
