Last weekend, Susan Boyle was just a face in the crowd. This weekend, clips of her singing on Britain's Got Talent have notched up almost 50 million views on YouTube. Her face appears on the front pages of papers in Britain and beyond, she been offered a seat on Oprah's sofa and has been told she is as good as guaranteed a worldwide number one album.
The rise of the 47-year-old spinster from Scotland has been a true global phenomenon. Last Saturday, viewers saw Boyle, with double chin, unkempt hair, frumpy appearance and eccentric demeanour, step onto the talent show stage and proclaim her dream of being a professional singer. The judges rolled their eyes and the audience pulled incredulous faces.
Onlookers, on set and at home, were rubbing their hands at the prospect of another hopeless, deluded loser being crushed by a withering Simon Cowell insult. Then she opened her mouth and sang I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables. Her voice confounded all expectations - the judges' eyes bulged, the crowd went wild and Boyle became an instant star.

That people want to see someone humiliated on national TV makes me feel like I'm in high school all over again.
In a few minutes she hit the full emotional spectrum from the judges — derision, incredulity, amazement, then sheepish self-recrimination.
This has gone around the world and is truly viral — if you haven’t seen it, do so now.
When you are good at something like this woman is, people appreciate it. She looks like somebody’s grandmother...I could see her baking cookies and cakes waiting for her grandchildren to come visit.
The Brits are famous for these heart warming stories.
And this is one of the best, ever!
I have played the Dream video and River mp3 over and over.
The 7.5 minute Youtube video of I Dreamed a Dream had 22.8 million views yesterday.
And that is only one of about 20 Boyle videos. Many of those others have hundreds-of-thousands to a few million views, too.
The mp3 of Susan Boyle singing Cry Me a River can be downloaded from this link:

I have never heard Cry me a River sung more beautifully. I love this woman’s voice. Elswhere I saw a video of her idol — Elain Paige singing I had a Dream and she doesn’t hold a candle to Susan Boyle. Susan needs to spend a couple of hours with a make up artist and a new frock and she can take on anyone. She is a pro through and through.

She has been single all her life, and she even admitted to never having been kissed, ever. That aside, watch the video, and you know instinctively what a genuine angel she is.
I watched one Elaine Paige version. And I agree — Boyle did it much better.
You're more likely to see her hanging out at the local Pub singing Karaoke.

Striking, poignant, instructive
SPINSTER?? They called her a spinster? Where are they reporting from, 1800? I have never in my very long life seen a contemporary report that referred to an unmarried woman as a spinster. How bizarre!
I’ve never been able to “feel” music like this before. She’s got an amazing voice - angelic is a perfect word to describe it. One would not need any more proof than to watch Simon’s reaction - immediate shock, followed by almost childlike joy and wonder at her performance. Lots of people think it’s just because of her appearance, but I disagree. Listening to her voice is enough for me.
Sings? She was phenomenal!
I agree with you...only I don’t care how she looks. Period. Her talent is raw and breathtaking...I am DO GLAD she found a venue that recognized her gift. (Her other gift-her unaffected personality!!!)
She has stunned everyone because she is the opposite of a narcissist in an age on narcissism.
