Two years ago, Paul Potts, a chubby mobile phone salesman, wowed the British TV public with his performance of Puccini's "Nessum Dorma" to win "Brtiain's Got Talent", The British equivalent to "America's Got Talent".
While good, I didn't think Potts to be that fantastic.
However last weekend, the third season of "Britain's Got Talent" opened and another diamond in the rough emerged.
This one is quite fantastic.
Susan Boyle, a frumpy looking 47 year old Scottish spinster, who lives with her cat "Pebbles" and admits she's never been kissed, came out on stage and told the audience she wanted to be a professional singer but had never had the chance.
She wanted to be like Elaine Paige, she said, and the crowd, and judges, sniggered....
Then she did this ..

Weird that they would bring up she is a virgin. Like it was something to be ashamed of.
just awesome and plus, that lovely woman took NO GUFF
Don’t lie. You know exactly who Paul Potts is. You put him down, because of the way he looked. the same as you put down Susan Boyles. I repeat again you are an empty suit
THIS IS WHAT THE SHOW IS ALL ABOUT! The average person with talent getting a break.
HAY, she is Scotish after all. LOL
..” if it ain’t Scotish ,it’s crap “ SNL
A great voice. A stunning indictment of the judges for their prejudicial thoughts and their comments after showed they thought she would be a joke simply because of the way she looked. Our world today is built upon “looks” and substance counts for very little.
Aye me laddy!
in fairness....the judges are looking for talent AND marketability. That’s why looks/appearance play a huge role in their comments and prejudices.
Now...this woman is extremely talented. The first notes she belts out sets the stage and it’s on like Donkey Kong. I too tear up seeing someone like Ms. Boyle put all the snickers, the jeers, rolled eyes, and the like aside and just do what she wanted to do...sing in front of a large audience and show her talents. And boy she did. I love it.
And I repeat again I’ve never even seen the show. Never heard of Paul Potts. But I did click someone’s link just now and watch his video. I see it’s a formula with the show. I had no idea Simon Cowell had another gig. I don’t know what channel this show is on. I don’t know if it’s possible to watch it in the US. I have no clue how long the show has been on. I don’t watch much teevee. But I can see how the formula works just from these two examples. Looks like a money maker.
Thanks. I appreciate your input. Breath of fresh air, actually. Thanks again.
I teach music professionally, and I asked one of the voice teachers what she thought of her performance. She said it was comparable to Ruthie Henshall's renditions, quite remarkable when you consider Ruthie is a classically trained singer and Susan spent years hiding in her basement playing with her cats.
Arguing with Huck is like wrestling with a pig.
It's a waste of time and it annoys the hell out of the pig..
Huck admits he doesn't know anything about anything. He somehow ascribes some sort of credence to my "article", but I am just a Freeper passing comment, so frankly I would put little stock in his opinion, though of course he is entirely entitled to it..
Suffice it to say Ms Boyle now has over 5,000,000 hits on her youtube videos and over 31,000 comments - most of which appear to overwhelmingly positive though I confess I have only sampled them and not read them all.
I think a star is born..
Me too. You a guitar teacher? That's what I do. I'd ask our vocal teacher, but she's a kook. Anyway, maybe this lady is better than what I think of her. We'll see when her album comes out, I guess.
Absolute bump!
Just saw this for the first time... this woman makes Sarah Brightman sound like a piker...
Wow!
Damn waste she has not been performing since she was 20!
As you said, too bad she hasn’t been singing for some years.
But then, at least she hasn’t been ruined by fame like some of them.
Makes one wonder how many “undiscovered” greats are out there.
“I hope this was her break and she gets to sing more too, but you know watching her, I dont think anything further really matters...to her. The way she started to walk off after she finished singing made me think she had achieved her dream by singing there in front of that audience and she was fullfilled.”
Great observation. Bears repeating. Authenticity, purity, simplicity. And as down to earth as anyone can possibly be. I pray she stays that way.
For later.
She now has been seen by over 20 MILLION on the web..
Among the 75,000 comments there was was one that I thought really nailed it...
It read “Never been kissed? I guess she forgot about God’s kiss!”
I agree with you completely. Certainly, this was not a story worthy to be the lead all day, on April 15th, as it was on CNN.
I've sung in choirs for 40 years.. and, known dozens of women who sang better.. half of whom, were probably "frumpier" too..
