Strange Food Combinations
leadercall ^ | April 9, 2009 | Robert St. John

I was sitting in the movie theatre eating popcorn and Milk Duds while watching the previews of upcoming attractions when my wife asked how I could combine two seemingly opposite food items. I told her that Milk Duds, when eaten simultaneously with popcorn, are very tasty. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.

While waiting for the feature presentation I began to think of other strange food combinations that I have eaten through the years. Since childhood, I have dipped my potato chips into applesauce. Like Milk Duds and popcorn, the combination of the salt in the chips and sugar in the applesauce play well off of each other. I have always put ketchup on butter beans and now my children have now acquired a taste for their father’s strange legume-meets-tomato-condiment pairing.

I began to wonder what other people might eat in the way of strange food pairings, so I logged on to my Facebook page and posed the question: “What are the strange food combinations that you like to eat?”

And it shows, too. Families are too easily separated by divorce and other tragedies.

I know. I know things are expensive today but...gosh...spring break for us meant going out to play while we were off for a few days before Easter. We sure didn’t get on planes and fly off to other states for recreation. My God...how much does that cost? Plane fare for a family...hotel fare, food, new clothing, purchaes...I can’t imagine it. I guess I don’t see anything wrong with staying back and enjoying being home being with family and celebrating together. I know people have to work too but...wow...the cost of these vacations are mind boggling. Sad. We need more of a stable foundation for our kids. I’m constantly puzzled by the extra incomes and then I wonder how much of it goes out on the above mentioned type things plus day care, take out, gas for autos, lunches, clothing, dry cleaning, etc...I’m puzzled.

My granddaughter is going to a prom and they spent $300 on a dress in a shop that guarantees that no one else in that school will have the same one. Good heavens. Times sure have changed, and certainly not for the better.

LOL! We were just talking about this, being it’s prom season. Proms are expensive now a days. My senior, tickets are $90/per person, limo is about $60 per person, etc. If the other date isn’t in the senior class, at least in my opinion, then the senior inviting the date has to pay all the costs (prom tickets, limo, etc.). All the shops around here try to make sure that the kids don’t have the same prom dress (for their school prom). However, it was the same way with our 1st Communion dresses. I was assured, by the shop where I purchased my girls Communion dresses that no one else at that Communion would have the same dress, lol, like it mattered or something.

Anyway, someone on here sent me her kid’s prom dress, it’s a beautiful dress, and I paid postage, that’s it! My kid won’t be wearing it, as it doesn’t fit her, and she probably isn’t going to prom at this writing anyway, but another of my kids is in a wedding and she’s wearing that dress :) We lucked out.

Times have changed but seriously it’s not all that different when it comes to this kind of stuff, imo. It’s all how we take it and respond to it all.

Everyone looks different in the same dress. And I don’t think it should matter either but these girls are very fashion conscious and extremely fussy about these things. Whew. I was glad to get a DATE!! And then my sister had to arrange that, LOL.

Oh I know. My youngest, 11, is what we call the fashionista.

I broke up (or rather, he cheated on me and I found out and we broke up) with my bf right before the senior prom. Fortunately, back then, the tickets weren’t what they are now and they weren’t non-refundable, lol.

I surely don’t miss those teen days ;) Now, with my own kids, I really appreciate my parents and all they went through.

Yep. My Dad was from Kentucky, so for him it had to be cornbread in the glass, and none of that sweet “corncake” stuff!

Mr. RightField likes cottage cheese with sliced jalapenos and Italian dressing. Gag. I have to leave the room when he’s eating that!

Also peanuts into a coke but I think that is dangerous but...a lot of people do it. Better them than me. I would be nervous.

You should be because that's supposed to be an orange drink a Nehi is best.
