I assure you that after meeting her and her city, your view of what politicians can accomplish will be changed permanently.
When I first viewed this story, I wondered several times whether I was watching a "Daily Show" spoof. It's real. This mayor, Mayor Hazel McCallion, 88, has won 11 straight elections. Her city has no debt and over $800 million cash reserves! It's the third largest city in Ontario, Canada... Mississauga.
You must meet this spunky woman. Oh yea, she plays hockey for relaxation, and played professionally earlier in life. (Video)
“Hurricane Hazel” ping.
Let her borrow TOTUS’ bc and pair her up with Sarah in ‘12.
We had a pretty good city manager in a small town years ago - he came in and immediately began to clean up the shoddy way the city had been run. He consolidated a few dept head positions, began an organized system of replacing old equipment/vehicles, and in less than 5 years time cut the city tax in half. There are some good folks out there -too bad they won’t run for higher office.
Fantastic! Love the music video! Pass it along!

The terrible, failed mayors, after running their cities into the ground, move on to run for higher office. They perceive their own failures as an indictment of the political power structures operating "above" their own, and seek to ameliorate those deficiencies in higher office, which, in their minds, would lead to vindication of the policies they enacted during their mayoral tenure. These people never take responsibility for their own actions - no failure, to them, is sufficiently tied directly to their performance nor ideas as to render the scapegoating of some 'other' infeasible. It is the same mentality as that behind the cries of "institutional racism".
This woman reminds me of my grandma, who passed away at around age 92. When she was in her 70's my mom and aunt pleaded with her to move out of her home which was in a rapidly deteriorating neighborhood (she was broken into twice, the last time the guy hit her over the head) and they tried to move her into a retirement home. She refused. "Why should I move in there? There's nothing but old people living there!" She was nearly 80. My grandma had a lot of spunk, just like Hazel. She did get an apartment downtown with lots of security and found some lady friends who she socialized with.
Thanks for putting a smile on my face !!!!!
Great Post

Gordie Howe got a sex change?
The city of Falls Church, VA, population 11,500, has over $300,000,000 in the bank.
For some reason our system does not bring forth this type of person. What works in our country are puffed up narcissist with limited ideas on what they’d like to accomplish - and BIG ideas on how they’d like to be viewed.
Mayor Hazel McCallion, 88,remember the democrats wanted youn blood in the WH and look what they gave us never let anyone under 21 vote!
Thanks for a great story!
The Peter Principle, on steroids!
Thanks for sharing this great story. No political whining from her but lots of laughing - she’s a gem! Still playing hockey - incredible!
