The death of Natasha Richardson has sparked a debate about whether it should be mandatory for skiers and snowboarders to wear helmets. There's been a sharp rise in the number of people wearing helmets after several high-profile ski accidents this winter and some compulsion has already come in. However, the medical evidence is not conclusive and it's not thought any widespread compulsion is imminent in the Alps.

I don't think its been determined yet the the fall cause the blood vessel hemorrhage in her brain. Her fall on the bunny hill, may have been the result of her getting dizzy or blacking out from the hemorrhage. I would almost bet on it.

That being said, NO it should not be mandatory. But I would advise it. I was given an expensive skiers helmet for Christmas a few years back. Not real crazy about wearing it at first, but it did without a doubt prevent me from being injured when being run into at full speed by a snowboarder. The collision knocked her out cold, She did not have a helmet. I was blown out of my skis about 20 feet but was unhurt except for a few bumps and bruises.

We already have. Seat belt laws, cell phone laws, how many toys in the backyard per dog, size of water dish, size of dog house, size of yard, mandated to interact with the animale, speed laws, traffic cameras, boating safety laws, vehicle registration laws, home school registration laws, the list goes on and on and on. Western Civilization is compelled to “fix” everything.

No, but having witnessed a person die when they hit a tree with the back of their head, I have to conclude that anyone who alpine skis without a helmet is a reckless moron.

I would venture to say that you are a more advanced skier than myself & just about everybody else on the slope where you ski. It probably makes sense for you.

I might add that snowboarders should probably wear helmets. The very nature of that sport practically guarantees you're going to hit your backside from time to time, and so whip your neck or strike the back of the head. I wouldn't make it mandatory, however.

Much like one of Rush's "teachable moments," I think.

My answer to the question?

NO.

I heard about a guy in New York who drowned in his bath tub.

Hey ... if it saves just one life ...

My daughter swears she saw some kid walking home from school wearing a helmet. Not biking. Not skating. Nothing that looking like sports equipment. Just a helmet. Sometimes bad things happen and can’t be prevented.

Thats right, Liberals aren’t the only one on this forum to defend red light cameras, the whole municipal court police cabal, seat belt laws, helmet laws on motorcycles, and all the myriad of other new and exciting interventions invented by people to save people.

There are a lot of head injuries in this country each year due to people falling in the shower.

It’s going to be VERY hard to wash my hair with a helmet on, but I guess I’ll have to do it if I want to stay “safe’!!

It’s a personal choice just as it is a personal responsiblity not state responsibility! All the ski lift has to do is post this sign: Not responsible for accident or injury on this slope...Oh they already do!

From what I understand she refused initial treatment, and was walking around hours later. Maybe she need a helmet at the bar?

“...Reckless moron”, eh?

Not even a CHANCE that someone might find a helmet restrictive and uncomfortable and CHOOSES not to wear one?
