Freeper Help Needed: WinXP Problem [Vanity]
Friday the 13th. - woooooo! | Slings and Arrows

Posted on 03/13/2009 10:55:58 AM PDT by Slings and Arrows

For some reason, when I choose the File >> New command from a WinXP folder, making a new text file is no longer listed as an option. Does anyone know how I can get it back, please? I can still make text files via word processor, but not being able to right-click and make one instantly is a major PITA.

Someone will suggest reformat your hard drive.
Ignore that
Someone will say “Get a Mac”
Ditto
Someone will have an answer. I do not even understand the question.

Keep a blank txt doc in each folder and use copy/paste.
Get a registry cleaner.
Reinstall, etc....

I see text document. You haven’t monkeyed with Notepad, have you?

Never heard of your problem or taking that pathway to get to that option. I usually just right click>new>text document. Anyways if that is your problem this link I am about to post has a fix for you, scan it first before using though.

I haven't even lemured with it. I did change the association for text files from Notepad to Wordpad, but that was literally years before this problem occurred.

Use TweakUI.

Much easier than editing the registry.

Didn’t work, but thank you - I Googled the problem before posting this thread, and found squat.

But, seriously, have you installed a new text editor recently or anything like that?

When I got this computer I installed OpenOffice. I suspect that may be the culprit.

Could be, but I don’t see anyone else having that problem. It would be more likely that some other program would have done that, or something else may have corrupted your registry.

For notepad, I usually select Start >> Run >> Notepad

That pops up the notepad window.
