More than 1,300 schoolgirls have experienced adverse reactions to the controversial cervical cancer jab.
Doctors have reported that girls aged just 12 and 13 have suffered paralysis, convulsions and sight problems after being given the vaccine.
Dozens were described as having pain 'in extremity' while others suffered from nausea, muscle weakness, fever, dizziness and numbness.
The vaccine is being given to girls under a Government programme to prevent women from developing cervical cancer.Ministers say it will ultimately save 700 lives a year.
Some have dubbed it the 'promiscuity jab' because it is given to girls to protect against the sexually-transmitted HPV virus which causes 70 per cent of cervical tumours.
Last night campaigners called for the vaccination campaign to be suspended in the light of the published side-effects.
But Government health experts insisted the Cervarix vaccine was safe and that the total of 1,340 reports was to be expected, given that more than 700,000 girls were vaccinated last year.
They also said many of the reactions resulted from the act of injection rather than the vaccine, and said there was no evidence that the jab caused any of the serious conditions such as paralysis.
Cancer charities urged parents to continue allowing their daughters to have the jabs, saying any risks were so minor and unproven that they could not outweigh the benefit of possibly saving lives.
The vaccination programme of young secondary school girls began in September last year following clinical trials on more than 18,000 women under the age of 26. Critics have claimed that not enough pre-pubescent girls were involved.
The vaccine, which is administered in three doses, is also being given to girls aged 17 and 18. This will ensure that by 2011, all those under the age of 18 will have been vaccinated.

AIDS makes people susceptible to cancer as well.
Both men and women can get cancer from HPV but only girls are being given the vaccine.
Does the vaccine not work on men?
Why should the men still get HPV and spread it to women who are not vaccinated? Why not vaccinate all of the people of a culture and age group?
Because making it a “women's issue” is designed to stifle all debate on the matter of whether the girls should be vaccinated for an STD before they've even begun puberty.
How many women who get cervical cancer get it from HPV? That’s the statistic to use.
Guys get throat cancer and testicular cancer from HPV.
Excuse me? Are they planning on giving it to newborns? Or are they talking about teenagers only ('cause that's not what they said).
And anal cancer, iirc. But let’s not confuse the government with facts!
Here we go again, Moms.............
I think boys and girls should have the vaccine. HPV can cause oral cancer as well.
I think all parents have a common interest in telling the government to go (bleep) itself.
I love that they call it the jab instead of the shot.
Too many uninformed posts on this thread, so early in the day.
*SIGH*
That is exactly what we will be doing this summer. Our Doctor already knows we will not be having him give it to Jax when she goes in for the normal check-up before entering middle school in September. Hubby made that appointment last week when he took her in to have the staples removed from her head.
It would be nice if the ads would make it clear that it is, in fact, a vaccine against an STD that has a cancer associated with it. And don't give me the old liberal saw about "no girl plans to be promiscuous, it just happens naturally. If nature governed all human behavior, we would still be living in caves and eating raw meat.
1 in 3 people who are sexually active will get an STD by age 25 (that stat was in a trojan radio ad).
There are ways to reduce all sorts of health concerns (including sterility) but the culture war has lost out to the sexual revolution. The Sex Positive agenda’s goal of seeing high school (and younger) students sexually empowered has come to fruition. It is no longer a question of IF they should be active, it is now “when”.
And yet even with condoms in schools, STD rates are high.
Well, IMHO, jab is a much more appropriate descriptor than shot!!!
I need to make appointments for some kids, too, before I’m spending all my time in the OB’s office! If I’d thought ahead, I could have done it this week; Anoreth has spring break, so I can use the car.
I have a 17 year old daughter. We decided not to get her the vaccine. When this first came up a couple of years ago, I discussed it with her, told her what it was and why they give it to young girls. She knows that sex at her age and with multiple partners increases her chances of getting the HPV as well as other STD’s, increases her chances of pregnancy and creates a false sense of intimacy with boys who may not actually love her. She is not sexually active, but I did tell her that once she is 18 and off to college, she may want to have it. At that point it will be her decision.
I have always been extremely honest with her regarding sexual behavior. She has never been afraid to ask me any question. It has made for some uncomfortable moments:)
3500 deaths per year in the US many avoidable with the same regular tests recommended to those who get the vaccine. Get real!

Sharing the car with a teenager -— already :(
