CalTech grad student named Virgil Griffith has conducted an interesting (albeit somewhat unscientific) study relating music preferences with SAT scores. While SAT scores are criticized for not accurately determining intelligence, the results show that the smartest students favorite musician is Beethoven, with an average SAT score of 1371, and at the other end of the spectrum is Lil Wayne, with an average score of 889.
Other bands at the top of the scale are Counting Crows, Radiohead, and Sufjan Stevens. Check out the full image of the results after the jump:
Surprisingly, no style of music stands out above the rest, but rather most bands fit within the 1000 to 1150 score range. Another question is whether music can be legitimately associated with smarts.
Does intelligence choose the band? Or does music define how smart we become? Where do your favorite bands appear? Do you think that music can make you dumb?
I’m all over the place on that chart.
Maybe I don’t listen the right kind of music: I understand the horizontal axis, but what determines vertical position?
I don’t see the “Bonzo Dog Doodah Band.”
Vertical seems to determine number of bands in the count, more bands are in that 1000 to 1100 range.
Looks like the chart doesn’t plot below 800. :->
Ditto. I’m either a genious or the most degenerate moron on earth.
People who listen to Jazz are dumber than people who listen to Jay-Z. Apparently.
I can’t believe you know who they are, LOL! Freepers are the best.
“Death Cab for Suzie?”
I have Uncles a few years older than me. I swear we must’ve worn out those LPs playing them so much, LOL!
(They also taught me the wonders of beer, much to Mom’s chagrin...)
I always say there is a fine line between genius and insanity.
Not one of my favorite bands are listed. I’ll take that as a sign that I am either an idiot or a genius, or maybe both.
I recall a study years ago that determined chickens lay more eggs if they are played classical music. I think that stupid people listen to stupid music, and stupid music makes you even more stupid than you already are.
You get 800 for spelling your name right.
That may be a case of those who answered with the phrase “Jazz” versus a specific artist. IE, dumb people who wanted to appear smart and sophisticated so they answered jazz.
I thought that was kind of odd as well.
I don’t see any jazz on the chart. Where’s Django? Where’s Duke Ellington? How about blues? Where’s BB King? Oh yea, and where’s the good old Grateful Dead?
Where’s White Denim?
It's true if they listen to Kenny G.
Kenny G is way, waaaay off to the left there.
Also, for vertical placement, I understand that they can't pile up all the "middle answers" on top of one another, but someone decided that Greenday was going to be in the lowest row, and Coldplay was going to be in the highest row. They ought to have some criteria for that decision process. This looks like something an eighth grader put together.
