why in God’s name would you go to buy a dog at a “pet shop”..they use puppy mills.
To: Travis T. OJustice
sorry if i was snippy in the previous post I left you.
I just get upset with “Puppy stores”.
To: Recovering Ex-hippie
She didn’t buy it; she looked at it.
I played with a Collie puppy at a pet store shortly after my beloved German Shepherd died (Collies are my 2nd-fave and living all alone, I just indulged a bit of fantasy by petting 1 when I was in grief).
I don’t like to promote pet shops in any way, either - not buying anything there.
But then, I wonder why is it different really from “adopting” at a shelter? By providing an outlet (which isn’t “free” as you pay often big “fees”) for the prospective adoptees, in a way you promote the continuance of adult pets going to a shelter instead of being cared for properly in the 1st place. “Oh, it doesn’t matter, because they can always go to a no-kill shelter...”

You make some interesting points.
sorry to hear about your Shepherd.
the no kill shelters I think are good, I have always found my adoptees at shelters.
what I never could understand is someone “giving up’ their pet of years because’ we moved to a place that doesn’t accept pets.” HUHHHHH?
I would move into an old trailor to rent ...or a total dump if it meant my pupster, my very very very best friend, could come with me.

Thanks, but that was in ‘95. Although there still isn’t a week goes by I don’t think of that greatest of dogs.
Sometimes people have hard times. I don’t like to judge them without really knowing, although there are a good many who don’t really care.

We have had about 12 JRT’s but never more than 4 at a time. We have 3 now and that is a house full. You have a pack. ‘9)

It started out as an idea to raise and sell the pups.
Brought the father then the mother from Ireland.
The first litter was 3 pups.
The 2nd 4, there will be no more.
The pups were given names, every one a different personality.
A couple slept with the daughters, a couple with us.
I ended up giving the pups away (kept 4) to friends and family, to homes I knew they would be cared for and they had plenty of room to run around.
As for my get rich plays for breeding and selling them,
just another example of ‘ if it sounds too good to be true....it usually is’

No worries, I hate the fact, too, adn would never get my dawg from there, but that pup was very cute. It’s mostly to see the dogs and play with puppies.
If I do get another dog that’s not from a rescue outfit, i’ll go to a reputable local breeder, not some far away puppy mill.

We are the same except we have always known we could never sell a pup. Half of our JRT’s have been rescues and you are right they are not all the same by a long shot. They have very different personalities. Only one of our 12 has been a biter. Of the 3 we have now their personalities are all totally different. Only one is the way JRT’s are thought to be, energetic and full of fun. Of the other 2 one is sweet and laid back and one is an alpha female who controls the others. Great dogs we will always have this breed.
