Lt Starbuck. Lost in Castration
Big Hollywood ^ | 01 19 099 | Dirk Benedict

Posted on 02/26/2009 6:09:23 PM PST by GSP.FAN

Once upon a time, in what used to be a far away land called Hollywood (but is now a state of mind and everywhere), a young actor was handed a script and asked to bring to life a character called Starbuck. I am that actor. The script was called “Battlestar Galactica.”

In the bleak and miserable “re-imagined” world of “Battlestar Galactica,” things are never that simple. Maybe the Cylons are not evil and alien but in fact enlightened and evolved? Let us not judge them so harshly. Maybe it is they who deserve to live and Adama and his human ilk who deserve to die? And what a way to go! For the re-imagined terrorists (Cylons) are not mechanical robots void of soul, of sexuality, but rather humanoid six foot tall former lingerie models who f**k you to death. (Poor old Starbuck, you were imagined too early. Think of the fun you could have had ‘fighting’ with these thong-clad aliens!) In the spirit of such soft-core, sci-fi porn I think a more re-imaginative title would have been “F**cked by A Cylon.” (Apologies to “Touched by an Angel.”)

I think that the new Starbuck is very attractive but I felt that it was a strong nod to political correctness to have a woman in that role. I watched the first season of the show since I have always like Ed Olmos’ work but after the first season I really lost interest.

I stopped watching when they ran the “One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter” episode. I knew it was off the rails at that point.

I read this article when it was first published on Bighollywood and still support his thesis.

To bad she doesn’t have any boobs. My wife is 60 and her boobs are a lot more fun than this skinny, flat chested broad.

I watched this show with anticipation for a total of 3 episodes. Three hours and I knew it was an anti-American, anti-man show.

The new BSG is interesting to me—not the show, but how people respond to it. On paper it seems like exactly the kind of thing I like. So I picked up the miniseries DVD and while there were moments I really liked—such as when the president gives the go-ahead for the ships with FTL to jump, leaving others behind to die—I was puzzled. Sure it was “dark” and some FX were good, but I didn’t much care for any of the characters.

I watched some of Season 1, half of Season 2, and while I again liked some of the FX, I STILL didn’t like the characters. Adama’s son is a wuss, Starbuck is yet another female character who is more macho than the men, etc.

I have Season 3 on loan, and haven’t moved to watch it. I think the reason is because despite claims to the contrary, I don’t think they are sticking to their original plan for the show. This is fine in itself—as you write shows and bring in other behind the scenes folks, things will change, get more complex and interesting—but in this case the whole thing seems kinda pointless.

I’ve read about the latest episodes, and that confirms my suspicions.

I wasn’t a fan of the original show, so I don’t have a dog in this fight. This one really does seem to be moving towards a “we’re all the same and have to get along with the terrorists, and really, isn’t a terrorist just a freedom fighter under another name?” finale. Or else, we find out they’re ALL Cylons, which would bring the pointlessness to a head.

Tricia Helfer is ridiculously pretty. Yes prettier than Sarah Palin.

I know I’m in the minority, but that woman looks like a transexual. Very boyish.

I’ve watched the series and you read the anti-american bit in about a dozen different ways. And it’s hardly an anti-man show Admiral Adama reminds me of my grandfather a bigger man than pretty much anyone I’ve run into.

And Starbuck is perfectly proportioned and very attractive. There’s nothing sexier than a woman who will drink with you smoke cigars and tear up a bar.

“orchiectomy”? I guess Dirk must have gotten a medical degree, though I can’t say I disagree with his take on things.

Sorry, Mr. Benedict, but while i enjoyed the Original back in the 70’s, it doesn’t stand up to today’s.

If they had waited until now to do it (instead of trying to cash in on the Star Wars craze), it might have been a different outcome.

She’s on “Burn Notice” now. Looks much better in BSG, which I have watched exactly once (in the interest of full disclosure).

Not saying this is true in your case, but 99% of the people who say such things have only encountered such women on TV or in the movies. Such women in reality are rarely sexy (tho' SOME are).

Yah. I didn't bother. I'm so sick and tired of the women are just as aggressive, strong and manly as any man.

Who wants a woman like that? not much different between a woman like that and a man.

I finally found a sci-fi show that I had absolutely no interest in watching. usually they gradually morph into political correctness, but they always do. Now they seem to start with it.

Remember Sam Carter's "wear my genitals on the inside comment?" Turned me right off. I'm tire of the Carter is smarter than any man, carter is stronger than any man, carter is more creative than any man, carter is a better leader than any man, carter is more aggressive than any man. And every man in the universe wants her.

Don't watch much Sci-Fi channel any more. Tired of the woman kicks a mans arse paradigm.

And if they can alienate a science fiction aficionado like me of 40 years, they got a major problem.

lol. sorry about the rant. I don't get many chances to expound on this subject :)

My problem is their idea of strong women. I think the president is believably strong, but the rest of the women are just men played by women. I can’t stand weak women, but Hollywood is pushing this absurd “macha” sterotype which has little to do with reality.

Just bookmark Breitbart's Big Hollywood and you'll be happy. BTW, this was a reprint of an article that was published elsewhere several years ago.
