Nigel Haskett was working at a McDonalds in Arkansas last summer when he witnessed Perry Kennon, a criminal with a long record beating a woman. Mr. Haskett tackled Kennon, threw him out of the restaurant, and then stood by the door to prevent reentry. Kennon went to his vehicle, grabbed a gun and proceeded to shoot Nigel Haskett multiple times. Haskett staggered back into the McDonalds and collapsed. Haskett has had multiple surgeries and medical costs are at $300,000 and counting.

McDonald’s has denied workers compensation benefits to Mr. Haskett.

Did Mr. Haskett have any other insurance?

This makes one wonder if McDonald’s would have been happier if the woman being beaten had received no assistance from Mr. Haskett, and instead was bringing suit against McDonald’s for millions of dollars in damages?

The guy is a hero, and McDonald’s craps on him with it’s special sauce. Nice.

And welcome to FR.

Workman’s Compensation should cover everything including healthcare due to this incident that happened on the job.

McDonalds, as a corporation, should be ashamed of themselves.

Honestly I’m not so sure McDonalds is doing this. I did till I heard their attorney explain that the insurance company had denied the claim and that it was working it’s way through the courts.

The McDonalds attorney said the guy deserves his money and will get it in the end. That isn’t the sort of statement an attorney would make if he were fighting to avoid payment.

Which is why ALL should avoid All major fast-food corporations, and instead go to LOCAL restaurants, not only are you helping your neighbor (and avoiding sending money to NY, or LA-wherever McD is located), keeping it local..in the community, but you’ll also have better service, and healthier food ;)!

They have to save their money for payment of frivolous lawsuits. /s
They would have had no problem paying the victim being beaten in their restaurant if she had survived and sued them.

It’s a topsy-turvy world...no good deed goes unpunished.

The carrier is probably denying based that defending patrons and acting as security was not in his scope of employment. They would normally lose in most hearings since violence and shootings do happen in fast food places for burglary and just rage. So this was an associated risk that he could reasonable be exposed to and then be considered in the scope of his employment for providing customer service.

The carrier is stupid trying to deny this since it happened on the property and the employee was shot while doing a heroic act.

Well, at least the criminal was nice enough to leave his gun in his car before going in to McDonald’s to beat the woman.
