JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The capital city's 61st homicide investigation centered on a man who was fatally shot while allegedly attempting to break into a vehicle. Officers responded to the scene just before nine o'clock Saturday night in an apartment complex in the 5700 block of County Cork Road off Briarwood Drive.
It is located behind the Magnolia Federal Credit Union. Jackson Police Department spokesman Lt. Jeffery Scott said 20 year old Brandon Lenard of Jackson died of a single shotgun wound.
Witnesses told police Lenard was breaking into an SUV at the complex when he was spotted by the owner. Residents told investigators Lenard was also seen attempting to steal a Cadillac before the shooting.
"You hate to see a young person lose his life in this manner, but those are the consequences when you take actions as such." said Lt. Scott. "But in this case last night the deceased was allegedly breaking into an SUV when the owner of the SUV came outside and caught him inside the vehicle." The unidentified vehicle owner was questioned and released.
BOOM.
He shot the perp with a shotgun while the perp sat in his SUV?
Talk about your Pyrrhic victory.
Put me on that jury and the shooter will walk - this isn't "homicide"; it's protection of ones' property. In my book, the SUV is worth far more than the deadbeat thief that tried to steal it.
Sounds like Jackson still has a lot of Katrina refugees. That used to be a safe part of town.
Doesn't matter what the property is, if it's not his, it's not his.

If charges aren’t placed against the Shooter after investigation by Investigators it will then go to the counties next Grand Jury for presentation and their decision will be to prosecute by issuing a True Bill or not to prosecute with a No True Bill.
That would be 61st homicide of 2008 in November.
Not 61st of 2009. That would be pretty alarming.
The way it works in MS is to remove the pants of the perpetrator, dispose of them, and put a big knife in his hand. Then call 911 and casually say “Help! I have just been attacked by a naked man with a knife in one hand and an erection in the other”. Then sit back for a few minutes. If it ever comes to court, ensure the 911 recording is played to the jury....
BTW, what is the ratio of No Bill to True Bill? Is there a place that shows that statistic by State and overall with the feral gooberment?

In NYC in the 90’s 61 homicides was a bad long weekend.
Yeah, LOL I know the drill but I was being nice and tryin to ‘splain how the system is supposed to work to those who don’t....
We have a 98 -99% True Bill rate in my rural county. If you prepare your case properly the Grand Jury will usually support you with a True Bill knowing that you still have to prove your case in court.
I have seen a few cases No Billed because of the nature of the case and / or the Jury understood that due process was the only reason it was presented to them in the first place and they had the power to put it to bed for good.
I have never had a No True Bill on one of my cases to date
And that doesn't scream "RUBBER STAMP" to you?

Is it still considered a homicide if the guy needed killin'?
