Safari 4 benchmarked: 42x faster than IE 7, 3.5x faster than Firefox 3
By Nate Lanxon on 24 February 2009, 6:01pm
Proving itself a staggering 42 times faster at rendering JavaScript than IE 7, our benchmarks confirm Apple's Safari 4 browser, released in beta today, is the fastest browser on the planet. In fact, it beat Google's Chrome, Firefox 3, Opera 9.6 and even Mozilla's developmental Minefield browser.
We used the SunSpider suite of JavaScript tests to determine which browser was the quickest, and the Safari 4 beat every browser in terms of speed, on both a PC running Windows XP SP2, and a Mac running OS X 10.5.6 with all updates applied.
Below are the actual figures if you want to see how all seven browsers scored against each other, but for quick reference we determined on a PC that Safari was a whopping 42 times faster than Internet Explorer 7, just over six times faster than Internet Explorer 8, 3.5 times faster than Firefox 3, and 1.2 times faster than Google Chrome. Here's Safari versus the rest, excluding IE 7:
Add IE 7's results to the PC graph and witness the shocking truth. These are results from a PC with a 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo:
1) Safari 4 (Total time: 910ms)
2) Mozilla Minefield 3.2a1 (1,136ms)
3) Google Chrome (1,177ms)
4) Firefox 3 (3,250ms)
5) Opera 9.6 (4,076ms)
6) Internet Explorer 8 (5,839ms)
7) Internet Explorer 7 (39,026ms)
On Mac OS X, Safari was four times faster than Firefox 3 and a depressing (for Opera) 7.5 times faster than Opera 9.6.
Results (fastest at the top) on Mac OS X (2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo):
1) Safari 4 (Total time 967ms)
2) Minefield 3.2a1 (969ms)
3) Firefox 3 (3803ms)
4) Opera 9.6 (7322ms)
We'll be bringing you a full hands-on report with the new features of Safari very soon, but you can download it yourself already here.

I’m trying out the Safari beta now. It is faster than IE6. Is there any way to import all my many bookmarks from IE6, does anyone know?

Oh, in addition, since you bought a new Mac after January 6th, you are eligible to get the update to iLife’09 for $9.95 (normally $79) if your computer doesn’t already have it.

You just started a great journey. iLife is some nice software.
With swordmakers help, I started switching to macs at home. now we have a mini and 2 macbooks. my kids create videos/dvds, and just have fun with their computers. as a home-schooler, I decided to get them the best equipment. So far, thrilled with their macbooks. Except I don’t get to use them as much as I had hoped...
A guy here at work balked at the price for a while, finally purchased a macbook a couple months back. Now that has used it at home for a while, he says he would pay even more for it...

Maybe that was supposed to be 4.2? ;’)

I confess... I am a computer dummy.
I downloaded it, then installed it, did restart and when I opened Safari, a very impressive screen filled my monitor. I hit the FR file, it opened. I clicked to close FR and the entire screen closed. Now when I hit Safari, nothing new!
What am I not understanding or what did I do wrong??
The bata did download, I checked that.
Thanks for any help.

This is a beta version and you have to deliberately download it from this location Can this be installed while keeping the current version intact? That's never an option with IE, but Opera always offers it, and I'd be more inclined to try this if it can run in that manner. Thanks!

You closed the window and didn’t quit the program. Click on the Safari icon in the Dock again, then go up to the Safari menu, click it, and click “Quit Safari” to close out of the program entirely. Then you can reopen Safari by clicking on the icon again.
Alternately, you could click on Safari in the Dock, then go to the File menu and click “New Window” and go back to browsing.

What am I not understanding or what did I do wrong?? Nothing wrong. Look carefully at the tool bar and you will see some differences. There is a reload icon/button at the right IN the URL field. The add bookmark + button is permanently attached to the URL address field at the left. Below that is the Bookmark bar... with a difference... it has a grid pattern next to the Bookmark book icon which invokes the Top Site screen. Also, at the top right corner of the screen there is a + icon/button for adding a Tab. Go to a website with graphics and text and click on the large A tool in the tool bar and watch the entire page magnify without distortion or loss of resolution. All of these are new. There's a lot more to find.

"Firefox is fast enough and it doesnt force me into a single source for hardware." You're shooting from the hip -- or someplace lower and farther back...

Safari 4 is designed to run under both OSX & Windows. See
Apple Debuts Safari 4 Beta for Mac and Windows
Including this:
" A new Windows-native look in Safari for Windows uses standard Windows font rendering and native title bar, borders and toolbars so Safari fits the look and feel of other Windows XP and Windows Vista applications."
(Was that a knee-jerk reaction -- or just another tingle running up your leg when you think of Bill Gates...?)

If you do digital photography you’ll love iPhoto.
Adjust pics on the main pic, not a thumbnail and then wait until you click ‘ok’. to see the results.
(and it saves the original so you can go back if you want)
IMHO it’s killer.
And the ‘09 version has face recognition. I don’t have it, yet.
Not sure how well that works though.
