Old Salem museum
Winston-Salem Journal ^ | January 28, 2009 | JOURNAL EDITORIAL STAFF

Old Salem Inc. is far from alone in being hit hard by the recession. But the museum's struggle is especially

distressing because it's an important tourism draw for Winston-Salem. For that reason, as Old Salem officials

struggle to do more with less, area residents should help by touring the museum.

Old Salem is an intriguing replication of life here, particularly Moravian life, roughly between 1750 and 1850.

But it's too easy to take it for granted.

History museums are struggling nationwide. Between the economy and the high gas prices of the last few years,

people take fewer vacations. When they do, families often visit amusement parks instead of history museums.

And schools are not putting the emphasis on history that they once did.

Thanks for posting this article. I spent 6 weeks of the summer of 1967 at Governor's School which was held at Salem College in Old Salem. I had to spend those beautiful summer days writing compositions in French which was the area in which I was nominated. The only thing that made it bearable was the lovely setting and visits to the Farmer's Dairy Bar that was located on the corner.

Anyone in NC who has not been there before should make a point of visiting Old Salem. I would also recommend stocking up on Moravian cookies while you are there because they are not only unique, but also are simply delicious!

Sad that all the museums and historical places are suffering.
One of my best memories as a child was visiting Colonial Williamsburg and taking the Miss Manners tour.
Of course, almost no kids have any historical interests now.

“schools are not putting the emphasis on history that they once did.”

Sad but true.

Very sad. They won't learn about our ancestors and their contributions and sacrifices.

They won't be as American as they otherwise would be.

I drove from Greensboro to Winston back and forth to work for 15 years and always got a kick out of seeing Old Salem folks dressed up in period garb driving down the road in their cars.
