PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) Mayor Sam Adams, who has admitted lying about a sexual relationship with a teenager, said Sunday that he would not resign. A city commissioner, Randy Leonard, told The Associated Press that Mr. Adams had left a phone message in the morning saying he had decided to remain in office. Two other commissioners told The Oregonian of Portland that Mr. Adams, the citys first openly gay mayor, had told them the same thing. The fourth, Amanda Fritz, declined to comment. Efforts to reach Mr. Adams were unsuccessful. The Oregonians editorial page has called for his resignation, as have three smaller Portland newspapers and the police union. Mr. Adams is being investigated by the Oregon attorney general. The case has divided the city, including its gay and lesbian community, although Mr. Adams has found strong support to remain, including a rally Friday on his behalf at City Hall that drew more than 400 people. Mr. Adams, who was elected in November, met separately with the four commissioners on Saturday to discuss his political future. Last week, Mr. Adams publicly apologized for lying about the sexual relationship he had with an 18-year-old man in 2005. The man, Beau Breedlove, has said he did not have sex with the mayor until he was 18, even though they met when Mr. Breedlove was 17. Mr. Breedlove, now 21, told The Oregonian on Saturday he had kissed Mr. Adams twice when he was 17 and welcomed the romantic interest. The statements contradicted Mr. Adamss claim that he had told Mr. Breedlove he was not interested in a relationship at the time..........
