Panoramic view of Hawaii's volcanoes
USGS ^ | January 14, 2009 | Hawaiian Volcano Observatory

I just thought this was a neat view of the volcanoes on the Big Island. Click for full-size. The Pu'u O'o crater is in the foreground; outflowing lava degasses through the crater then enters the tube system and flows toward the sea. The Halemaumau plume (the vent has gotten a little more active in the past few days) is in front of Mauna Loa. Mauna Kea is on the right.

The long view. Sure wish Mauna Loa would put on a show.

I thought Mauna Loa was dormant and that Mauna Kea was the active one? Are they both still erupting?

You do have it reversed. Mauna Kea is extinct (it better be, as it has several very expensive telescopes on its summit). Mauna Loa is still considered an active volcano; it last erupted in 1984. It's sorta kinda getting overdue for its next one.

Yes I did. If that’s the peak I’m thinking of, there are several observatories on top of it. I seem to remember the peak is at least 15,000’ high. High enough for snow to fall, even in Hawaii. Great life. Go snow skiing in the morning and surf the waves in the afternoon. And have a Mai Tai to end the day. Hang loose, bro.

The thing is spewing a lot of Global Warming crap into the sky. Obama needs to shut that thing down.

Whoops, it was Kilauea that I was thinking of. I was on top of Mauna Kea just a few years ago. A beautiful place. Nary a bubbling cauldron in sight. :)

We also hiked around the lava fields at the ocean’s edge and got to play chicken with lava floes. Dang, that stuff’s hot!
