**The 2008-09 BCS National Championship Game Thread**

Posted on 01/08/2009 11:15:31 AM PST by GOP_Raider

We've reached the final game of the college football season. I know that we've had some arguments regarding who really should be the national champion (and due to my own bias I've tried to stay away from it). But anyway, somebody decided #'s 1 and 2 for this game a long time ago and here they are.

The BCS National Championship Game: Florida vs. Oklahoma (8:00 pm, FOX) The last two Heisman trophy winners take to the turf for the waterford crystal shaped football from Sears (or at least it used to be from Sears). Leading up to this game, we've heard about who really should be the top ranked team and I'll say this. One, possibly both of these two teams can end any argument tonight. We know the offensive playmakers by now. Tim Tebow. Sam Bradford. Jermaine Gresham. Lewis Murphy. Juaquin Iglesias. But will the defenses even matter tonight?

As a Big XII fan, for the love of God, Stoops and OU manage to embarrass us

How did OU embarrass anybody last night. Hell, they were a play or two away from winning the damn game. (I'm starting to talk like Barry Switzer)

Here’s another thing. During the BCS Title game, they have so many TV timeouts. Therefore players have time to recover during those breaks. If this had been a regular game with limited TV timeouts, I wonder if conditioning would have been more of a factor.

Was it just me or did the commercials really suck?

Every old ad from the last month was was done over and over.

Are there any more annoying ads than Alltel's "Chad and Nerds" series? At least Sham-Wow's "are you following me camera guy" is amusing.

And FOX, Gawd!

They blew out of the game in a nano-second for every commercial!

At least they didn't screw up as many times on missing game action while reviewing the previous play like they did for the Fiesta Bowl.

My husband had me laughing last night over the commentators. He said he could do at least as well:

They can't keep going 3 and out and win this game.

They need to score to win.

It's going to come down to whoever scores last in this game.

Whoever scores the most points will win this game.

You can't keep turning over the ball and expect to win the game.

You have to capitalize on your turnovers.

I wish I could have been listening to Mick Hubert’s call with the TV sound turned down, but I couldn’t get it off the Internet.

With the season now in retrospect, a couple of things are clear:

1. SC clearly had the most dominant bowl win of the top 5 teams. They dominated a stellar Penn State team that boasted the #4 defense in the country.

2. The recurring criticism throughout the season was that SC was playing in a horribly bad Pac 10 conference and SC’s 11-1 regular season record was heavily discounted. Then the Pac 10 went 5-0 in the bowl season.

Looking back, SC beat, dominated, and decimated three top ten teams during the season. Meyer and Tebow are extremely lucky they didn't have to play SC for the Crystal Trophy. And Oklahoma didn't even belong in the title game, clearly.

From my perspective, I was expecting a game with lots of offense, especially OU. With that said, I agree, that game was a very intense game.

What’s rather sad is that up until a few years ago, the AP was the main poll in college football.

I know one thing for sure: The Ute fans and the SC fans are clearly much more cordial to visiting fans than are the Raider fans. Don’t know when was the last time you attended a Raiders game. I went to the 08’ season opener - a Monday night game against the Broncos. The Broncos fans were not well received in Oakland!

Oddly enough, I was at the ‘02 Raiders/Broncos game in Oakland when the Raiders clinched the AFC West and went on to the Super Bowl. It’s pretty easy to not remember things when you’ve been at the tailgate lot enjoying adult beverages until kickoff. :)

My uncle took me to a few Raider games at the LA Coliseum and the very thought of that still horrifies my mom.

The Big XII (and particularly the Big XII South) throughout the season had me asking “are the D’s in that division this bad or are they simply overshadowed by the offenses?” Well, I think the Sooners answered that, at least in part, last evening.

Also, I wouldn’t be surprised to see OU start next year ranked #1.

That one Florida interception should have been nullified. The DB did not have control of the ball when it hit the ground.

I am a fan of neither team, but that was a bad call. That said, OU screwed up badly at the goal line on two occasions and lost the game there.

Mick Hubert does the radio play-by-play for the Gator Network, his trademark phrase is “Oh My!”

The Ahmad Black interception? The ball never hit the ground, his arm was clearly under the ball the entire time.

I did, in slow-motion from several angles, at the very least, Black’s hand may have been on the ground, but there was no evidence that any part of the ball was touching the ground.

So at the most, there wasn’t enough evidence to overturn the call.

Oregon State might say otherwise. Tebow, Harrell, Bradford, and McCoy are the top QBs and the UF guy is the fastest player in the country. Try having SC play a game outside their home field.

Fortunately, the guys that play and coach football for a living made the decision to have the two best teams play for the championship. The rest of us are called armchair experts. You can promote your favorite team, but that doesn’t make them the best.

Thanks. I listen to the Texas Tech games on radio (although this year we had a lot televised) and I love the announcers - One night a guy emailed them while they were broadcasting and he was complaining about how "one sided" they sounded. They were laughing saying "hey buddy, we're paid by Texas Tech to broadcast this game!" lol

Ok, it was funny to me... ;^)
